Washington As US State Department posted a new map of India reflecting its long standing official position on the country's geographical boundaries, its spokesman acknowledged of having made a "goof-up" in this regard, which had resulted in a strong objection from New Delhi.

"We made a goof and we fixed it and we're now back in compliance with our own cartographical policy," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily news conference as she announced the posting of the new and corrected map of India on the website of the State Department and its travel related sites.

The previous controversial map, which showed parts of Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan, was removed by the State Department in November after India's strong objection.

India maintains that the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.

"I'm thrilled and relieved to tell you that we have now put the revised map up on our website," she said.

"What you will see when you look at these map is that they reflect the fact that the United States takes no position on the dispute and urges all the parties to seek a peaceful resolution to resolving the claims," she said.

"What you'll see on the map is consistent with what the US geographic position has been consistently: that there is a dashed line representing the 1972 Line of Control, reflecting Kashmir's unresolved status," Nuland said.

"We neglected to actually label that dotted line in the last round of map. It has now been labelled. The map also add our standard disclaimer with regard to Kashmir that says that names and boundary representations are not necessarily authoritative. As I said, that reflects the fact that this is in dispute and the US takes no position on the dispute," she said.

At least our vigilence is not completely sleeping by Anjali on 05 Jan 2012

I am always worried and angry whenever I see google earch and see red lines all over north east, east and north borders of India. Why one cannot question them? I studied map of India since childhood and nobody objected and now I see red lines on the boundaries of Arunachal Pradesh. My blood boils but I can't do anything. When I was in Spain and was eating in a so called Indian restaurant, I saw a poster map titled Azad Kashmir and below were names and contact numbers of people of their so called officials. It was annoying. I could not eat anything there and anywhere on that afternoon. So who is behind it? After USG's acceptance of goof up, I think at least our vigilance is not completely sleeping.

Moreover, intervening in this regard of India´s domestic affair, by drawing a new Map of their own as an inactive action for the enemies to provocate.

America thinks of its own interest by shanthanu on 05 Jan 2012

It is a misnomer to say that America goofed up in its India Map. They were just testing the depth of water of India's sensitivities against their Pak interest.

Similar instances in London restaurants by Priyanka Ray on 05 Jan 2012

I came across similar instances in London, especially amongst Bangladeshis who run restaurants in the name of India, though the real owner of the restaurant is from Bangladesh. Their table mats used to have the map of India and Bangladesh conjoined (strangely enough) but parts of Jammu and Kashmir severed in the image and also some of the North Eastern states! When I questioned the staff, they did not have an answer! Its surprising how some of these things go unnoticed by the authorities. Whether the world agrees or not, Bangladesh has considered J&K to be a part of Pakistan and North East states to be a part of China!
