Washington The US continues to receive information about terrorist groups planning attacks against India; the State Department has said and advised its nationals to be alert during their travel to the country in the coming months.

“The Department of State alerts US citizens to ongoing security concerns in India. The US government continues to receive information that terrorist groups may be planning attacks in India,” the US State Department said in its latest terror alert.

Terrorists and their sympathisers have demonstrated their willingness and capability to attack targets where US citizens or Westerners are known to congregate or visit. The recent advise replaces the travel Alert dated December 29 that expired on April 30, the State Department said.

Noting that 26/11 Mumbai attacks provide a vivid reminder that hotels, markets and other public places are especially targeted by terrorist groups, the State Department asked its nationals to always practice good security, maintain a heightened situational awareness and a low profile.

“US citizens are advised to monitor local news reports and consider the level of security present when visiting public places, including religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment and recreation venues,” it said.

It's Just Common Sense by James-USA on 30 Jan 2010

The U.S. State Department often updates their travel advisories. This one is nothing new - just a reminder to take common sense security measures. Americans are targets anywhere in the world - even at home. And no government can guarantee the safety of any other country's citizens while visiting.

US ADVISORY TO ITS NATIONALS IN INDIA by NIRANJAN on 30 Jan 2010

IT IS VERY COMMON FOR US EMBASSY TO ISSUE ADVISORY TO ITS NATIONALS IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY ABOUT NOT VISITING CERTAIN PARTS OF COUNTRY WHERE THERE IS UNREST. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS BUT TAKING CARE OF ITS CITIZENS WHO COULD BE IN HARM'S WAY. SO LET'S NOT MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT AND SEE THINGS THAT ARE NOT THERE!

Alert message issued by the US to its nationals in India by K.D.Viswanaathan on 30 Jan 2010

Because the neighbouring country Pakistan is not having friendly relations with India, terrorists trained on its soil are getting direct/ indirect encouragement to indulge in cross-border terrorism. Being a peace-loving country, India has not taken any steps so far to retaliate. It is a good thing that the US knows everything about the origin of this heinous crime and has chosen to alert American nationals in/visiting India.

Should US demand by Gursharan on 30 Jan 2010

Now its time for US to demand gurantee that its residents will be safe in India. The way India demanded guranee from Australia. Its surprising to see how in the reverse role indian polititions would react. They just used the media to further there dirty politics. I would love to see statement from PM and chief minister of Punjab.

What are you talking about? by Suchit on 30 Jan 2010

I didn't know US students were coming in big numbers to study at Indian Universities. The advice is meant for the tourists or visitors. It is not meant to watch out for 'racist' Indians (who might murder them), but is meant to be cautious against any potential terrorist threat.

Its all about responsible behaviour by Gursharan on 30 Jan 2010

If India can not guarantee safety of few US Citizens in Chanakiapuri. How do you expect Australia guarantee over 2 Lac people in all over Australia. Anyway Indians killed Indians and Australia was blamed by selfish political leaders . The country which is yet to punish killers of Sikhs in 1984 Genocide.
