US can't expect too much, too soon from India: US media

Washington The new Indian government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh could prove to be an "invaluable ally" of the Obama administration and the United States cannot expect "too much too soon" from the Congress-led coalition rule, a leading US daily said on Thursday.

'The Washington Post' observed that the new government will continue to move at its own pace in meeting regional and global challenges.

"Mr Singh's new government could be an invaluable ally for the Obama administration as it tries to stabilize Pakistan and Afghanistan, control the spread of nuclear weapons and preserve global free trade," the paper said in its editorial.

The observation comes when the US is looking forward to strengthen its strategic relations with New Delhi and make it a valuable partner in resolving key regional challenges including Afghanistan and Pakistan and global issues like climate change and Doha round of WTO.

"There is much to ask for: not just a renewed effort to improve relations with Islamabad but also a commitment to join in a new multilateral treaty on the production of nuclear materials; steps to control global warming; and less obstructionism at global trade talks," the paper said.

"Yet Washington cannot expect too much, too soon: Even with a strengthened mandate, the Congress Party – and India – will continue to move at its own pace."

Even as the US would like to accelerate the process of peace talks between India and Pakistan, the Post said, New Delhi is likely to proceed cautiously in confidence-building measures with its increasingly unstable neighbour.

The paper praised Manmohan Singh government for showing restraint after the Mumbai terror attacks in November last. "The unexpected landslide victory of India's Congress Party in this month's parliamentary elections has quickly inflated some high expectations in the country's financial markets – which have been soaring – and among Western governments," it said.

The paper also praised Singh for initiating market reforms in India, sustaining high growth and a deepening strategic alliance with the US during the past five years.

"Now, with the Congress Party's representation growing from 145 to 206 members in the 543-member Parliament – its best performance in a quarter century -- Mr Singh will be able to form a strong government without the left," the Post said.

"His jubilant followers and foreign observers are hoping for everything from deregulation of financial markets to a pullback of troops from the border with Pakistan," The Post wrote, but added: "Some may be disappointed."

Sustained growth at the cost of deregulation should be a complex path which has to be treaded cautiously. Moreso, over dependence on US economy can back-fires. India should emerge as a country for social cause where equality amongst human is more important than anything else. US economy doesnot represent the structure of the society at large as is evident from the stresses shown over the last few months because of the economy downturn. Let us try to come out as an inc( lusive)society.

India too can't expect too much, too soon from USA by Rohit on 22 May 2009

India has always been non-aligned with USA, its now that because of the US interests in the region and reaping the fruits of their past mistakes of creating Taliban and Extremist and terrorists the USA is aligning with India. If their think-tank feels that India is not a valuable partner in stablizing Afg-Pak they will again end up creating a mess not for themselves but more so for India. The USA always praises India for being a democracy but they prefer dealing with dictators and non-democratic nations as its easy to buy them or attack them, incase of India they have no such options, only they can wait for India to take its own time and decide. As for India, we must not expect too much from USA as they always talk of security threats to USA which is like thousands of miles away from Afg-Pak

Great time for friendship but with caution by Bharata on 22 May 2009

Yes, indeed it is a great time to usher in an era for greater friendship for mutual benefit. But it is actions that tell the stories. The US's backing of Paki admin with more funds and its declared belief that the funds will not be misused sure will creat distrust amongst us Bharatiyas. We offer a friendly hand, it is for the US to gain our trust and reciprocate with action and not rhetoric. US actions vis-a-vis Pak-Bharat scenario will form a strong basis for Bharat's attitude towards US. --Vande Mataram

India knows its onions by Hero Vaz on 21 May 2009

A strong Indo-US relationship is much desirable but the US should not think that it can be achieved by arm-twisting or rushing things through. India has learned how to give its interests priority and favourable attention without causing offence. The US should also disabuse itself of the idea that Pak is of any great consequence to India. Pak has conducted itself as an enemy for 60 years and it has been in an unstable state for many years of its independent existence. If the US wants to come out of the mess it has created in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it has to direct its efforts on the conditions existing in those two countries and leave India out. India is not going to waste its resources in rescuing the US that claims to be the world's premier power.

US/India - Natural Partners by Roger on 21 May 2009

Its a great time to be a democracy. The "old" socialist/capitalist polarizations of the Soviet Era have now all but disappeared. In face of the "new" religion based polarization - it seems countries like US/Europe/Israel and India have natural reasons to become steadfast allies - something thats become all the more apparent since 9/11, London Blasts, Mumbai's Terrorist Siege and the omnippresent fear of obliteration of Isreal by its hostile neighbours. Obama's obsession with China at the cost of India takes a step in the wrong direction. US cannot even hint at cold shouldering the Indians after the blossoming Bush era efforts, which may alienate the Indians, causing them to fear US overtures as inconsistent - which can be morally discouraging!!! China IS the most important trading partner - but in a pragmatic world - common ideals on which nations stand have equal importance, not less. China will always be a communist threat, and India a democratic partner!!

The new govt must prove utself to the world by Shrikant V Kamble on 21 May 2009

Indians are praising themselves for moderately free and fair elections. In fact the biggest victim of these elections is a common man. In last 60 years the Indian govt has benn so shameless and so thicksninned thant they no longer realise that its the people whom they represent. Here in UK the MPs are made to pay back extra expenses claimed. In India the MPs are looting India day in and day out. If the corruption stops and MPs work really for the people, India will become gratest country in the world in 5 years. Then Indians will no longer have to bother what US thinks. Can it happen?

A NEW US-INDIA RELATIONSHIP by Joseph Christie, Ph.D on 21 May 2009

The Washington Post couldn't be any truer than its assessment of a wonderful brand new relationship between the Obama Administration in America and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Government in India. This relationship has the potential to be an epoch-making one between two great democracies: one, a well-established, influential powerful and affluent nation, and the other, a young vibrant democracy, which has assiduously and steadily learned all the valuable lessons in international geopolitics , and with its centuries’-old culture and history has arrived steadily as a modern nation, improving its mettle in all technical and technological spheres; it is nation where its 1.2 billion people, are well set on the road to economic progress and peaceful relationship with all nations. The TIME IS JUST RIGHT TO USHER IN THIS GOLDEN ERA IN US-INDIA RELATIONSHIP.
