A Q Khan

Washington US has expressed scepticism on commitments made by the Pakistani government over restrictions imposed on the activities of disgraced nuclear scientist A Q Khan after his release from the house arrest, media reports said on Monday.

72-year-old Khan, who was put under house arrest in 2004 by then President Pervez Musharraf after the scientist conceded having passed nuclear know how to North Korea and Iran, was released by a Pakistani court on Friday.

Khan's release had resulted in sharp reaction across the world with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the White House expressing "concern" over it and the State Department describing him as still a "serious threat" to nuclear proliferation.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Saturday at the Munich security conference that all necessary steps have been taken by his government to ensure that Khan is not able to resume the spread of nuclear secrets or technology.

While the US government welcomed it, 'The Washington Post' on Monday said that the United States remains sceptical of such a measure by Pakistan and would continue to be watchful about the activities of the Pakistani nuclear scientist.

"The proof is in the pudding," a US official was quoted as saying by 'The Washington Post'.

Washington would be watching carefully to determine whether the restrictions by Pakistan were real, it said.

"We're very concerned," said the unidentified US official.

The official told 'The Washington Post': "Pakistan has given us some initial commitments but we're going to be following (the situation) very closely. The important thing is that they know we are still very serious about this individual."

Unprincipled Americans by Hero Vaz on 09 Feb 2009

America's confidence in the Pakis is pathetic and speaks poorly of their being able to assess people and situations correctly. They have made messes all over the world and should have learnt by now who to trust and who not to, as well as how to handle their overseas interests. They have, for instance, loaded the Pakis with money to be freely spent, even against themselves, proving that a fool and his money are soon parted. If America has any guts and principles, they should move the UN to take charge of Khan and have him tried by the International Court of Justice. Much dirt about the Paki rulers will also come out into the open and that should prove a deterrent for other countries with dangerous nuclear ambitions.

Double Standards of US by J. Jayaraman on 09 Feb 2009

U.S and other white nations never had sympathy for India as large majority do not follow the three releigions Christianity, Islam and Judaism. These nations had covertly supporting harmful actions against India by any country. Yet these very same countries would harp on safety of minority, pograms etc. Let us U.S.A show that they have shown the same concern for native Red Indians in their country? Have USA given voting rights to all Red Indians without any conditions?

USA and Pak by Bharti on 09 Feb 2009

where was US,s concern in 1980s and 1990s when pak was steeling the N tech from others and China with full knowledge of uncle Sam? So it is pay time. Let US pay with interest in Agfhanistan-Pak and may be a nuclear terror attack on US soil.
