The three-month long exhibition which begins on February 23 will take place at the San Diego Museum of Art. This event has been organised in association with the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Titled “Rhythms of India: The Art of Nandalal Bose”, this exhibition will comprise over 100 paintings by the artist. Commenting on the collection, professor Rajeev Lochan, director of NGMA said, “Nandalal Bose’s aesthetic legacy, cultivated by imbibing the significance of tradition and skillfully tempered with a rootedness in his times, is one of the most authentic responses of an Indian artist to his environment. The artist’s engagement with tradition is not a replication but rather a reinterpretation and reinvention to suit his inner sensibilities and their contemporary needs.”
The display will have several of Bose’s works that depict social issues like sati and reflect his struggle against colonial rule, where he supported Gandhi’s non-violent movement through the paintbrush.
SDMA’s executive director Derrick R Cartwright said, “Bose was a seminal figure in Indian art history and his paintings, drawings and murals will engage visitors with their refinement and pure aesthetic power.”
This is the first time that a survey of Nandalal Bose’s work has been permitted to leave Asia. The exhibition will also travel to Philadelphia Museum of Art from July to August 31 and the Art Institute of Chicago from May 31 to August 31, 2009. The creations will come full circle and they will be exhibited at NGMA in 2009.
