US vulnerable to terror attacks under Obama: Cheney

Dick Cheney

Washington Criticizing the US President Barack Obama's anti-terror policies, former US Vice President Dick Cheney has said that America is becoming more vulnerable to terrorist attacks under his Administration.

In an interview published in 'The Politico' magazine, Cheney apprehended that the terrorists are more likely to succeed with their catastrophic nuclear or biological attacks against the US in coming years.

In his first ever interview after relinquishing power on January 20, Cheney said the terrorists need to be handled tough and not in the language which has been adopted by the Obama Administration.

Protecting the country's security, he said: "is a tough, mean, dirty, nasty business."

Cheney said: "These are evil people. We're not going to win this fight by turning the other cheek."

Coming down heavily against Obama's decision to close down the Guantanamo terrorist detention center, he said a large number of terrorists released from Guantanamo have gone back to become terrorists.

The former Vice President said he is worried about the future of the US because the Obama team instead of "sitting down and carefully evaluating the policies" are following the campaign rhetoric and getting ready to release terrorists.

"The United States needs to be not so much loved as it needs to be respected. Sometimes, that requires us to take actions that generate controversy. I'm not at all sure that that's what the Obama administration believes," Cheney was quoted as saying.

Cheney said people in the future - when related files are made accessible to the public - would realize that several interrogation techniques like water boarding - he promoted - averted another 9/11 attack on the US.

"If it hadn't been for what we did - with respect to the terrorist surveillance program, or enhanced interrogation techniques for high-value detainees, the Patriot Act, and so forth - then we would have been attacked again," he said.

"Those policies we put in place, in my opinion, were absolutely crucial to getting us through the last seven-plus years without a major-casualty attack on the US," Cheney told The Politico.

He said there is a high probability of another 9/11 like attack.

"The ultimate threat to the country", Cheney told 'The Politico', is "a 9/11-type event where the terrorists are armed with something much more dangerous than an airline ticket and a box cutter - a nuclear weapon or a biological agent of some kind" that is deployed in the middle of an American city.

"That's the one that would involve the deaths of perhaps hundreds of thousands of people, and the one you have to spend a hell of a lot of time guarding against," Cheney said.

"I think there's a high probability of such an attempt. Whether or not they can pull it off depends whether or not we keep in place policies that have allowed us to defeat all further attempts, since 9/11, to launch mass-casualty attacks against the United States," Cheney said.

US vulnerable to terror attacks under Obama: Cheney by Pushpinder Singh Harsh on 05 Feb 2009

America had better take note of former US Vice President Dick Cheney's statement. It should not be forgotten that each time Bush Administration needed it, Osama Bin Laden released a recorded statement. Therefore, Cheney obviously has it straight from the horse's mouth.

Forget the message of Jesus by Pranab on 05 Feb 2009

For a neocon, it's surprising how he has dismissed Jesus' 'Turn the other cheek' message so easily. If America had not done their "tough, mean, dirty, nasty business" in Afghanistan and Korea in the earlier half of this century, the world would have been a safer place today. The seeds of tomorrow's violence lie in today's injustice. This is a never-ending cycle, which needs to be broken with a fresh approach. Obama might be that fresh approach, but Bush definitely wasn't.All religions have the message of peace and tolerance. When you forget those parts of your religion, you are not promoting it but discarding it's fundamental tenets.

appease by Indian on 05 Feb 2009

Obama is doing what this UPA govt. did. first act remove POTA, then a slew of minority appeasement measures. result- more bomb blasts, more terror, more deaths of innocents. We are not dealing with humans, we are dealing with barbarians, who behead, mutilate, slaughter smiling.

Popcorn Prez by Rajeev Pant on 05 Feb 2009

I agree with Mr Cheney...Obama is too much of a Popcorn President who just 'expects' great answers to pop out from somewhere. Protecting national soverignty is not a popcorn vending business.
