UT Administrator calls for early execution of Beant Singh Memorial

Chandigarh, January 10 UT Administrator Gen S F Rodrigues (retd) has asked the executing agencies of Punjab and UT to complete the Beant Singh Memorial project in the next six months.

The project has been stalled for over 11 years. Rodrigues was presiding the governing body meeting of the Beant Singh Memorial and the Chandigarh Center for Performing and Visual Arts.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal has said that remaining funds committed by the Punjab government for the project would be released.

Nearly Rs 9.75 crore has been spent on the project.

Punjab has still to pay Rs 4 crore for the project, while UT has already provided Rs 11 crore for the project. Initially, the cost of the project was envisaged at Rs 12 crore. However, the project is now pegged at Rs 25 crore.

The Administrator has also asked the officials to set up a core group of officers of Punjab and UT comprising Punjab Chief Secretary, UT Adviser and senior officers of Engineering and Architecture Departments to periodically monitor the progress of the work on the project.

The Chandigarh Administration will also fund the initial expenses of setting up the library and will also be involved in the maintenance and operation of the library with Punjab.

Tej Parkash Singh, former minister and son of Beant Singh, senior officers of Punjab and UT Administration including UT Adviser Pradip Mehra, UT Home Secretary Krishna Mohan, Principal Secretary, Transport and Information & Public Relations, Punjab D S Jaspal, attended the meeting.
