According to sources, UT is likely to opt for the underground metro rail project for the city, even though it was rejected by the Centre’s 11-member committee recently.

It is learnt that the consensus is being reached at by UT, Punjab and Haryana over the metro project.

Last month, the MRTS committee chairman, S Sivaramakrishnan, rejected the long-pending proposal of monorail or metro in its last concluding meeting, stressing upon the immediate need of having “Light Rail Transport” for the tricity. The UT administration had decided to reiterate their stand for the metro.

According to sources, the unanimous decision of all the three inter-connected governments has been made clear before the MRTS committee chief.

Sivaramakrishnan, who was also present in today’s meeting, will discuss the same with the union government and get back for more talks on the long-standing issue next week here in Chandigarh.

However, according to a senior administration official, the preference for metro rail would be communicated to the centre government.
