Chandigarh, January 30 The continuous drive by the Municipal Corporation to free Sector 17 of illegal vendors and beggars have proved futile so far, as the vendors and beggars continue to operate in the area after every drive.

The corporation has been claiming to remove all illeal settlements in the sector for over a year now. But the vendors seem to have prior information about the drive and they manage to flee from the spot before the enforcement team of Municipal Corporation seizes their goods. Once the team checks out, the vendors resume their place in the colony.

Besides tackling illegal vendors, the MC has also failed to deal with encroachment menace. Several anti-encroachment drives launched by the corporation have failed to create awareness among the shopkeepers.

Today also, a team of MC officials launched an anti-encroachment drive in different sectors of the city during which three truckloads of goods were seized. The drive was launched in the areas including Sector 17, Sector 18, Sector 19, Sector 27 and Sector 28.

Under the supervision of Municipal Secretary P K Sharma, the drive saw 51 violators being challaned. Not happy with the violations, Sharma warned the encroachers to stop occupying public land. The items seized during the drive included readymade garments, plastic wares besides other material.

“Encroachment by shopkeepers has become a common sight in the city owing to failure on part of the officials in dealing strictly with the offendors,” alleged a councillor.
