Kolkata, July 5 A newly-wed couple allegedly committed suicide at their residence in Mukundapur on Friday. The husband, Pintu Chowdhury (30), was diagnosed with neck cancer recently.

Pintu, who was involved in fish trade, had got married to Tandra (26) a year ago. As his condition deteriorated, he was unable to run his business and the couple had no income. According to the neighbours, they used to fight frequently.

On Friday evening, one of the locals knocked on the door as he had not seen the couple go out or come back for a long time. He, however, did not get any response. Worried, he peeped through the window and found Tandra hanging from the ceiling and Pintu lying on the bed.

The incident was reported to the local police station immediately. The police broke open the door of the house. The bodies were taken to the Baghajatin Hospital, where they were declared dead.

“We suspect that the couple committed suicide to escape their financial problems. They did not have any other source of income,” said a senior police officer. “Pintu had consumed poison and Tandra had hanged herself. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem,” he added.
