The crackdown has been severe. Four contractors have been debarred, one blacklisted and 15 issued notices to repair the roads that are still within the five-year warranty period. It is mandatory for all contractors to take care of roads at their own expense during this warranty. The civic body also withholds 10 per cent of the total payment till the end of this period to ensure no one shirks responsibility.
There are 42 roads in the city under warranty that have broken down after the rains. Most of them are in Karol Bagh, Narela, Rohini and Shahdara North. Commissioner K S Mehra reminded: “Contractors will have to repair roads if they are damaged within the stipulated period.”
The municipal body also constituted a monitoring committee, headed by Additional Commissioner (Engineering) Naresh Kumar earlier this month, with a clear directive — the roads should be repaired by August 30. Engineer-in-Chief Ravi Dass and eight other chief engineers, all members of this committee, have been egging on the work.
The civic body has identified bad patches on 319 roads which need to be mended by the end of this month. Nearly 2,02,412 square metres need immediate attention, said Director of the Press Information Department Deep Mathur.
Deputy leader of the House Ved Prakash Gupta had also discussed roads in a recent meeting with the Engineering department. He informed about another committee the civic body has set up — involving officials from the DDA, NDMC and the Public Works Department. This body will give tips on how to maintain the roads better. However, its members have not met even once till date.
