According to R J S Nalwa, an Indian Police Service officer: “In this Olympics, he was standing at the back of the line while other shooters were stealing the limelight. As he had just recovered from a back injury, no one counted on him. But ultimately he went on to achieve this feat.”
Remembering the soft-spoken sportsman, Nalwa pointed out that his dedication and conviction were note worthy.
“Avinav would go to bed right after dinner as he used to go for shooting practice early in the morning. Last year, he had a serious back problem, which was a great set back for him. But he did not give up. He practised hard and made a comeback,” Nalwa added.
“He has made not only his family but the entire nation proud of him,” said Nalwa.
He said he came to know about Avinav’s victory in the afternoon. “I could not reach him, but spoke to his parents on phone. They are proud of their son,” Nalwa said.
For Nalwa, Avinav is a cool customer, despite being a recluse. “He is always cool and composed. See, even after winning the Gold medal he is so composed,” said Nalwa.
India clinched its first-ever individual Olympic Gold medal in 108 years when Abhinav won the 10-meter air rifle shooting competition in China on Monday.
