Pune, March 7 For the second consecutive day today, the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, Pimpri — run by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation — came to a grinding halt for nearly four hours after doctors went on a flash strike in protest against the attack on their colleague on Thursday. Hundreds of patients had to go without treatment as the hospital became a protest ground. The doctors withdrew their strike only after Municipal Commissioner Dilip Band heard their demands and promised necessary action.

It all began around 9 am on Thursday when 23-year-old Pravin Walke, a resident of Vitthalnagar, Nehrunagar, died. His angry relatives went on a rampage in the hospital premises, holding the doctors responsible for Pravin's death. One of the registrar doctors was also punched in the chest.

Pravin, who had consumed poison, was undergoing treatment in the hospital's intensive care unit for last seven days.

His relatives who wanted to shift Pravin to other hospital were apparently told that “doctors are taking care of him.” An hour later, Pravin died which angered his relatives who then mobbed the doctors and created ruckus in the hospital premises with security personnel remaining mere spectators.

PCMC health chief Dr Nagkumar Kunachgi and hospital superintendent Dr Anand Jagdale denied that there was any negligence on the part of the doctors. “Pravin had developed aspiration pnuemonitis which led to his death. There was no negligence from the doctors,” said Dr Nagkumar and Dr Jagdale.

This morning after the doctors went on strike, demanding among other things, their safety and security, Commissioner Band landed at the hospital to express his support to the agitated doctors.

Condemning the incident, he promised legal action against those who created ruckus at the hospital. However, Band did not specify the concrete steps that will be taken to avoid repeat of such incidents. “We will take all necessary steps,” he said.

Dr Nagkumar however, said one senior doctor will now be present during evening and night hours — a suggestion made NCP leader Yogesh Behl. He said other steps are being planned to ensure safety and security of the doctors and the hospital.

Meanwhile, the Nurses Association and the PCMC Karmachari Mahasangh have also condemned the incident and demanded full security to the doctors.

Thursday’s incident is the second one in a week. On February 29, following the death of another patient, angry relatives had gone on a rampage, breaking glasses of the ICU.
