Mumbai, February 13 Sporadic incidents of stone-pelting took place in pockets of the city today, as a reaction to the arrests of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray and Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi. However, the police maintained that these were minor incidents and that the situation was under control.

“There have been incidents of stone pelting today in Jogeshwari, Kandivli and Goregaon areas. These areas have been the hottest spots today. Besides this, there has been tension in areas like Dadar and Shivaji Park, where shutters of shops have been downed. However, there were no injuries in any of these incidents,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K L Prasad.

Around 10 incidents of stone-pelting were reported, in Borivali, Kandivli, Dahisar, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Mulund, Bhandup and Samata Nagar. However, when Newsline contacted police stations in these areas, most said no cases had been registered, though the police Control Room confirmed the incidents.

“There have been no incidents in Goregaon, Kandivli or Borivali today. Some stone pelting on buses took place in Goregaon yesterday, in which four people were arrested. But today, it has been absolutely peaceful and without incident. The Charkop police got information from some shop-keepers from the Charkop Naka market area that three individuals were roaming around in a rickshaw and forcing local shop-keepers to close their shops. On receiving the information, the police gave chase to the rickshaw and arrested three individuals. So far, we have been busy with the bandobast duty and have not been able to ascertain whether these three belong to any particular political party,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XI) M M Ranade, under whose jurisdiction Goregaon, Borivali and Kandivli police stations fall.

In Dahisar, a BEST bus parked near the highway was thrown stones at by a miscreant, breaking some windows in the process at around 5:15 pm . Another similar incident occurred at the Nancy Colony bus depot, where a man threw stones at a parked BEST bus, shattering some windows.

“The miscreant who broke the windows of the bus has been arrested. But he does not seem to be a member of any political party. In fact, he is a local small-time hoodlum who probably decided to use the political situation for mischief-mongering,” said DCP (Zone XII) Shivaji Bodke. Another incident was that of a truck carrying hay which caught fire on the highway, but was later extinguished by the fire brigade.

Bodke said, “The driver of the truck claims that he saw a red coloured car come from behind and (somebody) threw a burning match-box on the hay piled on the back of the truck. The driver had noted the number of the car and from the registration; it seems to be a vehicle from the Raigad area. We are searching for the driver of the car, but it is very difficult to ascertain whether it was a politically motivated act or the work of a mischief-monger.”
