Kolkata, January 7 Students belonging to the CPM-backed SFI and Voice for Independence (VFI) clashed at the Asutosh College on Monday. The reason: SFI members did not allow VFI candidates to file their nomination papers for the students’ election to be held on January 21.

The VFI supporters alleged that SFI members had blocked the queue for collecting forms and also attacked several of their supporters, including a few girls. VFI is a coalition formed by Trinamool Congress’ students’ union, SUCI students’ union and other factions. According to the police, nominations will be filed again at 12.30 pm on Tuesday.

The warring students blocked SP Mukherjee Road from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. Police cordoned off the area in front of the college to avoid further clashes. No arrests have been made so far, said senior police officer B K Talukdar.

He added, “We will make necessary deployment tomorrow when the nomination papers will be filed again. Though it is not the job of the police to conduct a college election, we will provide full cooperation to college authorities in this regard.”

Piya Banik, a BA first year student and supporter of VFI, said, “The SFI students locked the gate at 2 pm and did not allow us to collect nomination forms. They also stopped us from meeting the principal.”

The SFI, on the other hand, cried foul over outsiders participating in the election. Joydeep Bhattacharya, a third-year student and SFI supporter, said: “Outsiders have got involved in college affairs and are threatening us.”

The college is an SFI stronghold. Recently, the CPM-backed union lost elections in some colleges, including Jogmaya Devi College, the morning section of the Asutosh College.
