Kolkata, April 20 Chirag United FC started their campaign in the final phase of the I-League qualifiers in style, trouncing Pune FC 4-2 in their opening tie at the Guwahati Nehru Stadium today.

United’s Nigerian striker Theodore struck the first hat-trick in the tournament while Shankar Orao, the man in form, scored the fourth goal.

Emeka reduced margin for Pune FC. The scoreline was 1-1 during the interval. The Kolkata team will play its next match agianst Vasco SC on April 24.

Incidentally, United FC management, frustrated with coach Amal Dutta’s refusal to tour with the team to Pune for the first phase of the qualifiers that concluded recently, is planning not to continue with the 73-year-old maverick coach from Kolkata.

The club top brass will discuss the need for appointment of a new coach after the team qualifies for the I-League this season.

The team’s assistant coach Anjan Nath, who has been with the team for more than 10 years now, gave much of the credit to Dutta for contribution this season before the team left the city for Pune to participate in the first phase of the qualifiers.

Nath told The Indian Express from Guwahati: “I am trying to implement Dutta’s strategy here. Today the team played in the 4-4-2 formation and it was Dutta’s directive. Despite the age, he took tremendous workload this time also in the team’s off-season training. And the reflection of his contribution is being seen today. Orao has been playing with superb agility as well as accuracy. The two wing halves have been moving with huge pace that cracked open the opposition’s defence frequently today. I will try to follow this style thorughout the championship.”
