Mumbai, February 6 The Mumbai University on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court that it was already in the process of issuing a circular regarding senate elections and said this would be issued on Wednesday itself. Advocate for the University Rui Rodrigues informed the division bench of Chief Justice Swantanter Kumar and Justice J P Devadhar that the university needed two weeks time for the circular to be placed before the bench.

The circular, besides announcing the elections, is meant to solicit registration of voters — the approved teachers employed with the university and its affiliated colleges.

The issuing of the circular will commence the process of election to the Senate for the teacher's constituency and will end a two-year wait for the polls after the Chancellor had countermanded the elections in July 2006 on the grounds of faulty electoral rolls. The countermanded Senate elections were last held in September 2005. Since then, the Senate lacks the representation of 17 teachers.

In order to avoid a repeat of the previous Senate elections fiasco, the university is taking additional measures such as workshops for the principal of the colleges and the non-teaching staff.

In the previously held Senate elections, there were 3,664 approved teachers registered as voters, whereas the total number of approved teachers from all the affiliated colleges of Mumbai University is pegged to be around 15,000. In the previous polls, the Bombay University College Teacher’s Union (BUCTU) had dominated the Senate by making a clean sweep of the elections, winning all the 21 seats. This time, the University authorities are putting extra efforts to ensure that more number of approved teachers get registered as voters.
