Unpredictable weather keeps New Delhi on its toes

New Delhi, March 10 The weather in the Capital is becoming unpredictable by the day. In the last five days, the maximum temperature has dropped from 34.7 to 30.7 degrees Celsius giving Delhiites respite from an early summer that was about to set in. The minimum temperature on Monday dropped from 19 degrees Celsius to 15 degrees making it one degree above normal. Temperature in the last couple of days has been five degrees above normal.

The cool breeze blowing across the city and the surprising fog formation in March are some unseen phenomena in the city. The freak weather change is creating serious problems to flyers as many fights get delayed.

According to the Meteorological Department officials, this is a “transition period” which is always unpredictable. “The North Westerly winds along with the moisture and dust particles are causing the fog which might take a few days to clear up,” said the Officer on Duty at the Safdarjung Met Department. According to the official, the nip in the weather is largely due to the continuous blowing of wind. “The body temperature is higher than the wind temperature. When the body comes in contact with the wind, the heat from the body is absorbed by it. So as long as the windy days continue, Delhi will have cooler days,” he added.

The weatherman predicts that the temperature will continue to be erratic in the coming few days. The minimum temperature will increase on Tuesday and Wednesday while the sky would remain partly cloudy though it is uncertain if there will be any rain.

The weather in Delhi was a bit erratic last year too when the minimum temperature around this time dropped to 10 degrees Celsius. But nothing can compare with the year 1945 when the minimum temperature in March was 4.4 degrees Celsius.
