Pune, July 25 Around 250 students gathered at the University of Pune premises in a meeting called by the Ishara Maharashtra Vidyarthi Sanghatana (IMVS) in protest against the 44 per cent hike in food charges at the hostel.

The students have decided to give a memorandum to the vice chancellor on Saturday on the issue.

“The prices of meals have been increased from Rs 14 to Rs 20 since July 1, bringing the food bill to Rs 1,200 per month. Most of the students at the hostel are enrolled on the earn and learn scheme, through which they get about Rs 1,500 each month. After the hike in food prices, they will have virtually nothing left for other expenses,” said a member of the Ishara Maharashtra Vidyarthi Sanghatana.

Students have pointed out that while the inflation index stands at 10-12 per cent, the university was disproportionately hiking prices by 44 per cent. At the same time, the food proportions offered at meals is shrinking, they said.

“These days, the meals do not contain papad or butter milk, which was a regular feature earlier. On one hand, the university has hiked the price, on the other hand, they have reduced quantity. This is unfair,” said a student.
