Two others — Shyam Sunder Sharma and H S Panwar — found guilty of criminal negligence by a trial court in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case were also granted bail by the court.

The Delhi High Court granted the bail on observing that the offences committed by the four were bailable, and they were already out on bail during the trial period.

The Court also directed the Ansal brothers and the two others to furnish a personal and surety bond of Rs 50,000 each as a pre-condition for their release on bail.

“The appellants have been on bail throughout the trial period. Their offences are also bailable,” Justice H R Malhotra stated in his order.

On November 23, last year, all four accused were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by a sessions court for criminal negligence.

They have already appealed against the verdict. A bench of the court has directed day-to-day hearings, starting from February 15.

The tragedy in 1997 had claimed the lives of 59 people during the screening of a Hindi movie.
