New Delhi Reports of telephone tapping and the IPL controversy rocked Parliament on Monday with both Houses adjourning for the day as an agitated opposition demanded JPC probe into the two issues.

The opposition members were not satisfied with Home Minister P Chidambaram's statement rubbishing the charge that it had authorised any telephone tapping of politicians and alleged that the issue smacked of the 1975 Emergency days.

While the BJP in both the Houses went hammer and tongs against the government on the phone tapping issue, the SP and RJD focussed on the IPL issue with Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav personally leading their party members into the well of the Lok Sabha.

Members of the BSP, which is cosying up to the government ahead of the crucial cut motions, were conspicuously silent during these protests.

Making a statement on the tapping issue in both the Houses, Chidambaram said, "I wish to state categorically that no telephone tapping or eavesdropping on political leaders was authorised by the previous UPA government. Nor has the present UPA government authorised any such activity."

He said the report in 'Outlook' magazine on phone tapping was thoroughly enquired into and "nothing has been found in the records of the NTRO (National Technical Research Organisation) to substantiate the allegations."

Demanding a statement from the Prime Minister, senior BJP leader L K Advani recalled a press conference held on June 25, 1985 to mark 10 years of Emergency in which Atal Bihari Vajpayee spoke about phone tapping of leaders like Chandrashekhar, Jagjivan Ram, Charan Singh and journalists like Kuldeep Nayyar and Arun Shourie.

He also demanded passing of a law to prevent the government from tapping phones of political leaders.

In the Rajya Sabha too, BJP vociferously demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee enquiry, with senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu seeking a statement from the Prime Minister.

Both Houses, which had earlier adjourned twice on the issue with repeated protests by the opposition parties, were adjourned for the day as the protests continued.

SP and RJD members trooped into the well of Lok Sabha seeking a JPC probe into the IPL controversy. "This is the biggest scandal in the recent years," the RJD chief remarked.

The Home Minister, who read out the statement on phone tapping amid continued slogan-shouting, said, "Further enquiries are being made into the allegations in the magazine. If any evidence is forthcoming or discovered, the matter will be thoroughly investigated by the appropriate agencies".

He read out a similar statement in Rajya Sabha.

Congress's unclean government by Ash on 27 Apr 2010

Phone tapping is a criminal offense, not political. If Congress can stoop so low, it is time for opposition to unite and pass a no confidence vote" against Congress. Congress, a party that does not respect democratic principles, refuses Indians demand for a clean government, does not deserve to continue to govern.

Eavesdropping by Anant on 26 Apr 2010

In western countries and in USA eavesdropping is a common practice specially after the terrorist attacks. Most conversations, private or not, and emails are religiously monitored to collect information. There is nothing wrong with this practice for the security of the country. If conversations of people like Advani,Narendra Modi,Tytler and Sajjan Kumars of India can be monitored what is wrong with it. Such information can avoid future genocides. People who are active members of Islamic organisations have to be monitored for the sake of the innocent Indians. Mr Mehta of Outlook is making unnecessary hue and cry. Those who have nothing to hide should have no problem with this practice. What is wrong with monitoring activities of Maoists and Mr Karat who is so against India or Thackerays who are always planning destruction.

Uproar in Parliament by Anant on 26 Apr 2010

It was sad to watch the way BJP clowns were shouting and jumping like baboons. When Advani spoke no one made any noise and when the home minister tried to respond to Advani's accusations he was shouted down. So far the opposition has behaved badly like street hawkers. BJP is making a fool of themselves since the nation is watching their misbehaviour in the Parliament. One wonders if BJP has any idea of democratic system.

Dangers of Decontrolled Tapping by Janahita on 26 Apr 2010

Please do not cry from roof tops about this technology which has been around for the last ten years or more. For all you know, the equipment could also be in the possession of those perceived as internal threats. But we know our politicians will never act in a mature way and they will never talk about chara ghotala and issues of that genre.

Has all Opposition Parties lost Political acumen . . .. . . by Hemant ; Hyderabad on 26 Apr 2010

All opposition Parties are shouting;none talks exactly to the point. What is point in talking about Emergency;Human Rights.Does Congress take seriously.PM has already left India.Spying was done by special instruments installed cars. These cars are under authority of National Security Advicor{NSA}NSA is under direct command of PM. Means Does PM ordered for spying.PM is not having such political smartness. Then only second person who can order NSA is Sonia Gandhi.Opposition must keep harping on this. If Govt says; no such spying; then how that Magazine has confirmed with Nitishkumar & Digvijay{of Congress}& confirmed with them about such taped talk. Attack Sonia Gandhi & Congress in anger reacts wrongly.I think it is high time Advani should retire. His long talk; has no meaning; must have made Congress happy.Let him keep talking abot Emergenccy and PM's explaination in Parliament& so on.Opp must know to hit where it hurts most.As far Sonia Gandhi is safe;Cong Govt wo'nt botheabout Parlaiment

Phone Tapping by Varind on 26 Apr 2010

Phone tapping is surely as rubbish as IT and CBI's clean chit to Mayawati. Scams & Political manoeuvrabilty of opponets shows UPA is headed by a very honest PM and Sonia does not believe in lust for power.

A blot on democracy by Chandramohanarao on 26 Apr 2010

In stark contrast to what the Home Minister said in the Lok Sabha, the congress spokesperson Sighvi told media that there could have been an inadvertent recording of the phone conversations between people mentioned by Out Look magazine. The Government should come out clean on the matter. If the report of the Magazine were true, it an blot on the Indian Democracy. Out Look magazine should come out with more evidence to nail the authorities concerned.

How Did it Get Known ? by Jagteraho on 26 Apr 2010

Intelligence gathering is always under cover. You cannot run a spy ring declaring what you are doing and through whom. Consequently spies when caught seldom return. Therefore, it is not surprising that there is such intelligence gathering; in fact if Prakash Karat ever comes to power, he will have a much more efficient intelligence network or else he will be an insult to the party and its philosophy. It is thus surprising that UPA's intelligence gathering effort got revealed. The government must determine how that happened and how it can be prevented. Any party in power will do the same using the very officials who are engaged in these activities now. As always, our politicians are only looking for excuses for stalling the proceedings of the Parliament.

Phone tapping by hsk on 26 Apr 2010

It is unjustfied and uncalled for. If phones are tapped.it happens only in congress regime. Congress policy is to find weakness of the opponent and demolish their image at the time of election or force the opponents to keep them mum.

Phon tapping to learn opposition strategy by Ash on 26 Apr 2010

Phones of opposition leaders cannot be tapped without PM's authority! It is a serious matter that has wide repercussions including Congress learning opposition strategy, and winning elections. The tapping of phone is a criminal offense, and PM should take responsibility. Such dishonest acts break trust and foundations of democracy!

No response reveals guilt by Ash on 26 Apr 2010

Congress has some nerves to delay responding to these serious charges! Are they delaying to cover up their tracks? Are they delaying to find a scape goat on whom they can pin charges? Can Congress legally tap phones of opposition leaders? If not is this a crime for which Home minister has to resign?
