New Delhi, May 1: Industry body Assocham called for diversion of part of revenue collection of the Indian Premier League from sponsorship, team ownership and broadcasting rights towards upgradation of cricket stadia.

Three per cent of the total income from the IPL should be used for the betterment of the cricket stadia across the country, the chamber said.

The upgradation is important keeping in view the 2011 Cricket World Cup which will be hosted by India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangaladesh, it said.

While the seating capacity of the Indian grounds is at par with the best stadia in the world, the infrastructure is not equally matched with the other renowned stadia, it added.

Upgradation of one stadium requires an average investment of Rs 30 crore. Thus, about Rs 300 crore (USD 75 million) investment is required to bring the existing 10 grounds up to international standards, Assocham President Venugopal N Dhoot said.

The chamber also recommended setting up of two fully modernised cricket grounds in the tier II cities. "We should have one indoor stadium on the lines of Telstra Dome Stadium in Melbourne which can be used as a venue for the important matches of the World Cup to deal with the rain interruptions," he said.

The technical equipments, including world class pitch covers automated in nature, rain water removal machines, dew controlling measures (hovercrafts), should be used to raise the standard of the cricket grounds, he added.
