Chandigarh, February 1 While stating that the Chandigarh administration will soon have to resort to reasonable power cuts in view of steep rise in power consumption during the intense cold wave this season, officials of the electricity department have urged residents to judiciously use electricity.

In an appeal issued today, the administration said against the allocation of 235 MW, Chandigarh was receiving 120 MW to 150 MW of power, thereby overdrawing 10 MW to 75 MW at different hours of the day. Further, overwithdrawal under any circumstances could lead to failure of the grid system, plunging the whole region into darkness.

Chandigarh does not generate power on its own and is entirely dependent on firm/ad hoc allocation from Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and various Central power projects.

Keeping in view the situation, the spokesperson of administration appealed people to use electricity judiciously, particularly, in morning hours so as to help it overcome the temporary shortage.

“People are requested to switch on their storage geysers in the night hours so that the load during morning hours could be minimised, the spokesperson said.

Sanjay Kumar, Finance-cum-Secretary Engineering said that if the position did not improve, a reasonable power cut might be imposed.
