The 75-year-old novelist, born to Indian parents in Trinidad and has been living in Britain since winning a place in Oxford, has admitted in his biography that he frequently humiliated his first wife (Patricia) and even refused to gift her a wedding ring.
Naipaul often abandoned her to go travelling with Mrs Gooding, the married Anglo-Argentine with whom he fell in love in 1972, and would often tell his wife how he was missing his mistress but then say that he needed Lady Patricia to help him with his books, it has been revealed.
"I was liberated. She (Patricia) was destroyed. It was inevitable," the Nobel laurate said.
The book, penned by Patrick French who was given free access to all of Naipaul's papers, claims that the novelist started visiting prostitutes when the couple were living in London three years after they married.
"In the summer of 1958, turning imagination into reality, he (Naipaul) started to have sex with prostitutes. He would find their telephone numbers in local newspapers and visit them in the afternoon in secret while Pat was at work as a school teacher," The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday, quoting the biography.
Naipaul, according to the book, has admitted that his mental cruelty towards his wife, who was suffering from cancer, may have killed her. "She suffered. It could be said that I killed her. It could be said. I feel a little bit that way," he said.

Being a young female Guyanese by birth raised in Trinidad from East Indian ancestry. Im am not suprise by his lifestyle but the fact that he tells the whole world of his about vices is something that an ordinary person would not want to tell the whole world about his bad deeds. But I wish he can return to his birth place Trinidad and live his remaining years besides it was Trinidad's Schools taught him the English language not England and not India. He should stop considering himself to be 'a man with no side' and start living for the future East Indian generation in Trinidad and the rest of Caribbean to appreciate his work in the field of literature.

As sad as the truth about Naipaul sounds, His mistakes are but a by product of a morality not based on unshakable truths. We often know what we must not do but not always do we know why? This story depicts the outcome of such a mind. When you truly understand why something is wrong it give you the strength to do the right thing.

I once bought of copy of WOUNDED CIVILIZATION, found nothing of substance in its pages, threw it away vowing never ever to read this writer again. Now comes his bullshit out! So I wasn't wrong after all. Dirty minds can not write ennobling literature; how can they ever? And Nobel Prize in these come down times is no guarantee either that literature in question is good.

A writer is a spokesman of the society he represents. He should be morally sound and upright. Naipaul has brought shame to the Indian mind and the literary tradition of Tagore and Smt.Sarojini Naidu who were icons of morality

Naipaul is a fascinating author. Personally I believe in his work. Although I rate his travel based work higher than his novels. I fail to understand how his personal life is of any significance. I had an idea about Naipaul. It is an insult for Noble Prize institution. However, I bet his book will earn lot of money and that is what he cares. The guy is sick.

"for having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories" Naipaul got his Literature Nobel. Possible that the Nobel committee in 2001 treated cruelty to his wife as a part of suppressed history. In futute, biodata verification and credentials accreditation may be added criteria for awarding the coveted prize. Naipaul's conscience should have spoken long back and not at the time of release his biography. Revealing this now has much more than repenting. May the soul of Patricia rest in peace as she did not know that her husband rather tormentor Naipaul would get a Nobel.
