Bangalore Unfazed by the outrage over its attack on a Mangalore pub, the self-styled moral brigade of Sri Rama Sene on Thursday threatened to forcibly ‘marry off’ couples dating in public on Valentine's Day.

Sri Rama Sene founder Pramod Muthalik said that his activists would hold protests at hotels, hostels and colleges where Valentine's Day celebrations are held.

"Those found dating, expressing their love, cosying up to each other would be married off," Muthalik, who has been released on bail in the Mangalore pub attack case, said.

He said at a meeting of the Sene held on Wednesday it was decided to request the Karnataka Government to ban Valentine's day celebrations in the state. A memorandum to this effect would be submitted to the Governor Rameshwar Thakur, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and Home minister V S Acharya, he said.

The outfit has formed ‘five teams’ which would roam around with a hidden camera on Feb 14. A priest would accompany the team which will have a turmeric stub and 'mangalsutra'. Muthalik, who came to limelight after the January 24 attack by Sene members on boys and girls in the pub, even claimed that the marriages will be ‘registered’.

Hitting back at Union Minister Renuka Choudhary, who had demanded stern action against the outfit, he asked why the Minister had not voiced her opinion ‘when they were cases of rape and crime against women in metros’.

Asserting that the outfit's drive was not politically motivated, Muthalik said, "as a citizen of the country, it is my democratic duty to put an end to anything that is obscene."

While issuing the threat to marry off couples who dated in public, he insisted that while holding protests, Sene activists 'would not take the law into their hands'.

Muthalik claimed his activists had been working for the last 10 years and had ‘succeeded in putting an end to the Valentine's day celebrations in five districts of Karnataka’.

The Sene chief said he faced 53 cases and appeared in 41. To a scribe's retort that if the couple were minors an act of marriage would be unlawful, he said that in such cases the couple would be counselled and the police informed about their activities.

Srirama Sene leaders warned parents who did not want their wards to be married off to ensure that their children do not step out on February 14.

Reacting to Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Choudhary's comments that he would not understand love since he was a celibate, Muthalik said, ‘being a brahmachari does not mean I do not understand love’ and said ‘it was not right for a woman who was a national leader to remark like this’.

Muthalik claimed that he had ‘defended women in distress whenever situations arose, unlike Choudhary’.

On reports that the pub attack involved extortion, he challenged those making the allegations to provide proof.

"None of my workers have resorted to extortion", he said.

shameful........................

mangalore pub attack by bigbrother on 08 Feb 2009

Looks like Mr Muthalik is joining the ranks of our 'cultural icons' like Thackerays clan in Mumbai and Mr Narendra Modi and his cronies in Gujarat. But it is intersting that while the RSS is trying to recruit the IT brigade as its allies, its other Senas are trying to attack the lifestyle of the same IT brigade. It is even more interesting to see Mr muthalik talk about his democratic right to stop 'anything that is obscene' without worrying about others' democratic rights. But this langauage of demcoracy is now used so often by those who seem determined to destroy its very fabric in India - Mr Modi and Tahckeray again- that one wonders if demcoracy has any meaning in India for its ordinary citizens? And yet, we seem to be electing patrons of such outfits and violence again and again through our own demcoratic choice so may be we are confused about what we want as well in our politics and our society.

Ram Taliban Sene by Sajith on 08 Feb 2009

It is very shameful that such elements are acting freely without any fear. The root behind this is the Govt's in-action. Why was Muthalik and company granted bail in the first place when he had already openly threatened to attack couples for V-day. We the people are not specifically talking about Pub or Western Culture, it is about fundamental rights. Tomorrow, such self styled Hindu Taliban goondas will enter my house and tell me what to do or what not to do. ANOTHER SAD FACT IS THE MEN IN POWER LIKE CM AND HOME MINISTER IS ECHOEING THE SAME IDEOLOGY WHICH IS ENCOURAGING TO THESE HOOLIGANS. They should learn to keep their person opinion to themselves and take actions to keep peace within the state. WE DONT SEE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TALIBAN AND HINDU RADICAL GROUPS, BOTH ARE THE SAME- DISGRACE TO THE NATION AND RELIGION. As the govt is shying away from the responsibility, it will not far away when citizens will have to equip themselves with weapons to counter such elements.CM ACT NOW

Politics and Religion - "The Mangalore Incident"ss by muralidharan Jagadeesan on 07 Feb 2009

Politics and Religion have always been interwoven in India. However over the last few years, this heady mixture has eroded not only the secular basis, but also our democracy itself. The riots in Vadodara and Mumbai were an indication, how much the lines had become blurred. The Mangalore incidents bear further testimony. What is more shocking that Law and Justice have become casualities to political expediency. The long term answer is community activism and grassroots approach against the politics of identity. This means undertaking the risk of getting involved, both individually and collectively. The government or even well meaning public officials and politicians alone cannot combat these issues. It's time the public joined in. This is the meaning of true democracy, and secularism and the rule of law are principles worth fighting for.

self styled custodians of Indian culture by Subhash on 06 Feb 2009

Mr Muthalik says that it is his DEMOCRATIC DUTY to end obscenity. Somebody should ask Muthalik whether democratic rights apply only to him? Will he now decide what rights are to be enjoyed by the common public ? Is there anything more obscene than his hoodlums savaging women?Muthalik, Raj Thackeray and his ilk(The Indian Taliban) are a threat to the Indian democracy and should be treated and punished as traitors to the Indian cause. However, expecting the politicians to do anything about is futile as all politicians, irrespective of parties, consider themselves the guardians of public morals(whether they have morals or not is irrelevant to them) considering the censorship and censor laws in the country. We the public have to rise and deal with this menace.

Culture by Called Indian on 06 Feb 2009

Lot is being talked about on Indian Culture and its suremacy and need to protect them. There are a pleanty of such culture which is hard to see else where .Stand in a Trafic signal and observe how meticulously Indians follow the signal , you will be astonoished. If not convinced , go to a railway counter or some palce where a Q is formed, Oh! you can see how Indians follow the Q protocol and U should get conviced on the rich culture Still not convinced, on a rainy day walk on the road, how considerate the motorist when they move near you, will certainly convince you about the richness of our culture.

misreading by Ganesh on 06 Feb 2009

These facts are very much part of India. But if you observe it closly you will find that it is the westernised Indians who engage in these indisciplined acts as a sign of adventurism.

Thugs are thugs.. by Papanasam on 06 Feb 2009

Hoods are hoods, whether celibate or otherwise. This man's sorry repression has got into the press because he lives in a poor, illiterate country with scared people who are impressed enough with violent hoods to believe that they represent tradition or values when all they represent is petty crime. They must be stopped at all costs, whether or not the state of Karnataka raises a finger to protect the constitution and the fundamental rights of all citizens.

Muthalik Wants to get married himself. Somebody help him. by Deepa C on 06 Feb 2009

Somebody get this Muthalik man married ASAP. His frustration is turning to violence. He must have been born and brought up in SWAT, his attitude to women is just like an extremist Muslim.

Mera Bharat Mahan by Guru on 06 Feb 2009

I am ashamed to be a citizen of a nation where rogues and thieves and thugs threaten people and the police does nothing, yet a 6 year old girl gets thrashed by the police on suspicion of theft.Mutalik - I will be celebrating valentine's day in Bangalore. I will wait for you - and I will have a webcam streaming this live. It's a challenge.... you shameless waste of indian oxygen !!

RAMSENE, THE TALIBANISTS OF INDIA by Niranjan on 06 Feb 2009

IF THE CENTRAL GOVT. HAS GOT ANY GUTS, THEY SHOULD MOVE IN HEAVILY ARMED COMMANDOS TO KARNATAKA AND SHOOT AT SIGHT ANY RAM SENE ACTIVIST TRYING TO PREVENT PEOPLE FROM ENTERING A PUB OR TRYING TO MARRY OFF PEOPLE. WHAT RIGHT HAVE THEY TO ACT LIKE GOD? THESE PEOPLE ARE HITLERITES AND TALIBANISTS AND SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM INDIA AND PREFERABLY FROM THE WORLD. THIS MIGHT SOUND DRASTIC, BUT THAT WILL ALSO SCARE OTHER TALIBAN LIKE OPRGANIZATIONS TO BEHAVE PROPERLY.

Ramasena by manisha on 06 Feb 2009

This is so funny. USA should invite Mr. Muthalik to eradicate problem of single moms and even teenage single moms. He is needed more in the US than in India.

Wonder what he would have done to Lord Krishna ... by Krishna on 06 Feb 2009

After reading this article, I just wonder if Lord Krishna was really a Hindu and and Indian because his antics were more than a match for what the Valentines would do in public. Is the Vanara Sena going to debar Krishna from Hindu religion? Yes, I meant Vanara Sena because the southies were just vanaras for the noble northies.

Hindu goondas by GNS on 06 Feb 2009

This mini-Hitler of Karnataka and his Goondas must be arrested for his threats to interfere in other people's affairs. Is there a government in Karnataka or it is there just watching to see what "evil fruits" can be gathered from this outfit's illegal acts.I am 61 years old and have two young sons. But I do not interfere in their lives nor will ever allow others to interfere. There is no real culture left in India now and what is now parading as Indian or Hindu culture is a ritual-obsessed religion called Hinduism where most Hindus forgot what our Vedic scholars preached. Why is it Hindu culture champions are obsessed with pubs only frequented by the middle class ? Why don't they attack arrack shops which do real damage to people's lives ? Arrack shops are owned and defended by tough people and our Sri Rama Sene cowards are no match for them.Besides poor low-caste Hindus are not really in Hindu fold till they want to convert. It is time to expose the silent antics of Sangh Parivar.

valentine day and indian culture by govindarao on 06 Feb 2009

I fully agre that Indian culture has to be preserved. The pub culture is certainly not in line with Indian culture.People should raise voice on tnese issues and protect rich Indian culture. Those that are in custody of national culture and administration should care for this instead of creating politics in the larger interest of country and our culture.Playing politics deliberately at the cost of Hindu culture is to be condemned.Party politics to stay in power at the cost and danage to culture is condemnable and rejected at polls to teach such politicians a lesson for life and for good of country.Other wise worse days are ahead for people to suffer.Let intelligentia think and act without any delay.

Roughing up the wrong side by godwin on 06 Feb 2009

I want all the young couple to set a trap for these goons and teach them a lesson. Never let the moral police grow in confidence..they should be stopped. There should a student wing raising against these fools to teach them some lessons. Wake up young generation else your future is going to be very difficult. today its valentains day, tomorrow they will make you wear dhotis and trubans to keep our indian culture, progressively they will make women not to attend schools and keep them indoor. Remember Taliban, it all started like this and they stuck to it in a big way dragging the country into stone age. I am sure BJP ruled states are roughing up the wrong side, young people are the future of india, if BJP pose a threat to their fundamental right they are going to end as a mere opposition party in the future. There are many creative issues to attend, never make yourself looks like fools in the eyes of young generation.

Shy away from this Western fascination! by Satya on 06 Feb 2009

Having lived in US, this fascination with the Western (corrupt) ways of life in India is something that I don't approve. Here in US, people are trying to inculcate the eastern ways of living and including things like Yoga, Indian music into their lives, youth in India are misled to follow the trash, stupidity of the west, like the Valentines day! VD is primarily a "business" promotion event of a few commercial enterprises and youth are being misled.A few days back PBS, the TV channel in US aired a series on India and for the first time ever, a westerner portrayed a near accurate picture of Indian culture and it has opened a lot of western eyes and people want to emulate Indian behavior!Although I approve that one should have "freedom", I think freedom at the expense of culture is to be discouraged. Having said that, I am not approving this forced marriage, but I think it is the responsibility of each one of us to educate fellow Indians the value of our culture and vow to preserve it!

Crime in the name of Ram Sena..... by SK on 05 Feb 2009

He is not the law or even above law to declare marriage. People should understand that more people will react to him he is going to capitalized on that. Just ignore him and if anyone on his behalf tries to force someone then local people should "round up" to those goons and hand them to the police and ensure that there is a FIR lodged. Underline of all this drama is to gain power and money in politics. Only innocent people will get affected. People should make the custodians of Law enforcement accountable for such criminal activities. Also media should do some real social service by investigating this idiot on his past shady background (I am sure he must have lot) and make it public on a daily basis till everyone start discounting him. Make him an example out of him so that no other Muthalik will ever come forward and use Hindu religion to harrass people like Taliban does.

crime in the name of ram sena by bibio on 06 Feb 2009

Time for me to change by Jas on 05 Feb 2009

I have hated all organized religion, all my life, to the core of my heart. But being a pragmatic person that I am, I think, time has come for me to convert to the Higher form of Hinduism called Brahmanism. Hindutva (whatever it means) is coming and I can use the services of few dozen of those detestable creatures called dalits or muslims or christians. I know conversion to the exalted position of Higher Being is not permitted. However, I am counting on the fact that the great Hindu priests like Muthalikji and Advaniji would take me into their folds, in the light of changed circumstances resulting from opposition from few ignorant and misguided hindus (especially on this board). Jai Brahmanism Jai Hindutva, Jai Indian Culture. And death to western culture, at least, til I get my visa to one of those hard to get into western country. P.S. - Indian Express, please help me. I am sure this post will convince Advanji and Muthalikji that I am already one of their kind.

Shame on all these SENAS by Sunny on 05 Feb 2009

Forced marriage is RAPE, some poor girl will be forced to marry some guy who she doesn't even like but this “sena” saw him offering her flower or card and she is forced to marry him, what a perfect solution this guy has for teaching our youngsters about our culture. First of all he should not be allowed to use Lord's name, and secondly our RIGHTOUS politicians should take their heads out of their ass and stop this BS all these so called sena's are doing in INDIA. Can any one with money, goondas, political power, vote power, corrupt system on their side will be allowed to do whatever they think is right, how long will my people just watch and take no action to stop this? Such people have no respect for culture, women, god or law, if these people get chance they will sell INDIA for their own interest all they want is their pockets to be full of cash and bully others. They cal themselfs RAM SENA….SHAME on all these SENAS who use Lords name and our culture to provoke voilence on streets.

Ram Sena all set to Target Sun Empire before Big Gang Bang!! by KTkumar on 05 Feb 2009

Basically it is a story of known quota criminal Dr RameshBhange who was caught red-handed in love act by neighbors and watchmen with Vamp Vidya. Excuses he/ She makes are very hilarious. He says HE WAS INVENTING a LOVE MOBILE-- battery that can be charged by Love Acts!! Though Topic is very sensuous and kind of Taboo but treatment given by Director Asxxxxade makes it worth watching with a family! In climax, Dr RameshBhange gives speech at UNO summit held at SATARA for world energy crisis and he says--open love booths at each corners and get love energy Intimate scenes between vamp Vidya and Dr RameshLallu very well shot by Camera man Dr Ashxxxxx(NHxxx UK).It is a sonless comedy but background scores does create desired impact.Dr Ramesh Lau’s attempt and his arguments with Patents Office Judge about patenting his inventions are hilarious. His Dream sequences with Ms MedhaRokde to have LOVE FARM- Energy Farm where couples enjoy Love and contribute to Global Energy Crisis are out

If it is your private life, keep it private do not show your emotions in public. by Nabeel A J on 05 Feb 2009

In reply to Dr. Surjeet Khanna's statement, let me humbly state that if it is your private life, keep it private do not show your emotions in public. Nobody has the right to mislead other people. Let me make it known that older people , who is experienced is better in guiding people.Look at their advice as one which is given by your father or mother, i bet your parents would support this view.
