Ahmedabad, July 22 The father of the two boys who died under mysterious circumstances at the Asaram Ashram early this month, disappointed many of their supporters on Tuesday when they met Chief Minister Narendra Modi and broke their maun vrat. The state government has proudly claimed all credit for the end of fast in a press release, although the Vaghelas have maintained that they have only ended their silent protest and it was their own call to end it.

An official press release on Tuesday stated that the Vaghelas broke their fast and maun vrat at the bungalow of Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, Director General of Police P C Pande and Additional Secretary of the CM, G C Murmu. The CM himself handed a glass of lemonade to the Vaghelas, the release added.

The Vaghelas were on an indefinite fast and maun vrat since July 14 to protest the mysterious deaths of their sons after they went missing from the Asaram Ashram run gurukul on July 3. The two boys were found from the Sabarmati riverbed near the ashram on July 5. The Vaghelas have been alleging that the police, at the behest of the Asaram Ashram authorities, are hushing up the investigation in the case.

Praful Vaghela told Newsline at his residence on Tuesday afternoon that they have broken the fast after meeting the CM at his residence, and that he has assured them a free and fair investigation in the case.

Praful, who has been demanding a CBI probe into the case, said: “After the CM's assurance, we have dropped the demand for a CBI probe. But if we notice any foul play during the investigation, we will again demand for the same.”

But for their supporters, who came from far-flung areas including Mumbai, it seemed like an act of betrayal. When Praful went to Akhbarnagar Circle to ask his sympathisers to end their fast after his return from the CM's residence, he was greeted with anger.

He was gheraoed by angry sympathisers who felt betrayed by the compromising act.

Praful tried to pacify them saying that he had only broken the ‘Maun Vrat,’ and not the fast. He told them that he had gone to meet the CM after persistent pressure from Palanpur MLA Govind Prajapati, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Director General of Police, P C Pande.

Vinod Sonkusare, a Mumbaikar, who is on a fast since the last three days at the Akhbarnagar Circle, said that the Vaghelas should have consulted the people associated with the movement before arriving at any decision. “We are feeling betrayed. I do not know what exactly happened. I am worried about the people who have been arrested while protesting in favour of the Vaghelas,” said Sonkusare.

Many of the residents living in the vicinity of Madhavbaug Society where the Vaghelas live, have alleged that the decision to call off the fast was taken under the CM's pressure and that money seems to have exchanged hands to hasten the process. Meanwhile, Praful Vaghela has been reportedly admitted to a private hospital on Tuesday after his health deteriorated in the night. His family members did not respond to the calls enquiring about his health.

Investigation handed over to the CID, Crime
According to a press release by the PRO of the Director General of Police, Gandhinagar, the state government has handed over the investigation of the case to the CID (Crime) with immediate effect.

Death of the boys by mullurkara on 23 Jul 2008

The Asaram ashram could have taken the inititive for a fair probe into the inciden by itself ratherthan praising the Govt and police and could have saved itself from the ignominy. It will be difficult even for adults to reach the spot in that dark night forget about the kids whom even the rustle of leaves can terrify. The truth whatsoevr has to be out for the common people's life and safety and the enquiry cannot be compromuised. Its not right from the parts of vagela to succump to pressure in this score.

TRIBUTE IN FOND MEMORIES OF ABHISHEK VAGHELA, AGE 10 AND DIPESH VAGHELA, AGE 11 by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 23 Jul 2008

A FATHER'S DREAM: I had a dream tonight As I fell asleep; Oh! the touching sight, Makes me still to weep: Of my little lad, Gone to leave me sad, Aye, the child I had, But was not to keep. As in the distance far, I my child did seek, There, in train came by, Children fair and meek, Each in lily white, With a lamp alight; Each was clear to sight, But they did not speak. Then a little sad, Came my child in turn, But the lamp he had, Oh! it did not burn; He, to clear my doubt Said, half turned about, “Your tears put it out; My Dear Dad, never be sad, For after all I am your lad, Your own soul, flesh and blood; And I will come back to you, By reborning into the family Sooner than you think.” Yours ever loving grieving fathers Shantilal Vaghela and Prafulbhai Vaghela

HOW PUBLIC CAN HONOUR THE DEAD AND PRESS POLICE AND GOVERNMENT INTO ACTION by SUBHASH SAMPAT on 23 Jul 2008

Forget the dirty jerks and the windbags in politics and religion. What can the ordinary members of the public do to honour the dead? What canwe do to honour their memories and provide solace to the grieving families? We can honour them by placing thousands of batches of fresh flowers in or outside our places of worship or outside our offices in our villages, towns and cities or by holding memorial displays and ceremonies at our club, community or association. Each flag and batch of flowers could represent a person who has died. One thing that I have observed of the British which we could well emulate is the placing of flowers either at the spot where the person has died or at the places of worship. I remember when Princess Diana died in a road accident some years ago, British people expressed their sorrow and love for her and paid tribute to her by placing tens of thousands of batches of fresh flowers outside the places of worship in their village, towns and cities. When someone dies in any untoward incident or accident in Britain, British people express their sympathy and pay tribute to the dead by placing fresh flowers at the accident spot where the person has died. We could do the same.

Misusing the accident by Harish Bharti on 23 Jul 2008

Several people have misused this incident to defame AsaramJi Bapu. Some people who have no concerns for boys did very ugly things to spoil Ashram's image, they even hired people to pretend like Ashram followers..I am requesting you to completely understand the situation and support the truth, there are thousands of students studying in Gurukul for a decade and this one incident in a decade is being used by evil factors to defame the great personality and you guys are supporting them.. that is very frustrating.Has media every tried to highlight how Bapuji's Gurukul has served the children from some of the poorest families in tribal areas .. who even do not have sufficient to eat.. world would not have cared if those poor children would have dies of hunger.. so Media has not been highlighting the best efforts but are misusing an incident to mislead the people.Once again I urge you support the truth!

Know the truth first by Shyam on 23 Jul 2008

People knowing nothing about Ashram and Gurukul are making noise to act against Ashram. Nobody seems to listen to what Ashram Authorities have to say. Ashram's website ashram.org has a video explaining what happened on July 18. As far the deaths of Gurukul Students is concerned, both the Post Mortem report of Civil Hospital and the Forensic report have established that the death occurred due to drowning. There are several important questions which nobody is answering or reporting. Who are these sympathisers? Who came from Mumbai to sit with the parents? Why is Congress backing the Bandh? The truth is the missionaries (you can check who owns most of News Channels) are propagating false news. Nobody talks about the Congress-hired hooligans (paid Rs.200) who beat up Devotees, instead every news channel and newspaper is busy spreading the news that Ashram people beat up media. Please visit ashram's site to know the truth.
