Chennai, October 23: MDMK chief Vaiko was on Thursday arrested for making 'highly inflammatory speeches in support of the LTTE', police said.

Vaiko had at a public meeting in Chennai on Tuesday said a separate Tamil Eelam under the leadership of LTTE chief Prabhakaran would come into existence soon in Sri Lanka.

"LTTE and Sri Lankan Tamils could not be separated. Though we are against any violence, we should differentiate between violence and right", he said.

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had assured me no military aid would be supplied to Sri Lanka, had gone back on his word," he alleged.

Vaiko said, "if the need arises, I will be the first man to take up arms in support of Sri Lankan Tamils. I will gather youths all over the country for this purpose".

The MDMK presidium chairman, M Kannappan, had told the meeting that time would come to demand for a separate Tamil Nadu. In that meeting, a two-hour film on Sri Lankan army's alleged atrocities against Tamils was screened.

In a statement on Wednesday, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa had demanded that all LTTE supporters be booked.

Tamil Nadu government's decision to arrest Vaiko was to make it clear that ruling DMK's support was only for the suffering Sri Lankan Tamils and not for LTTE.

Vaiko, now an ally of Jayalalithaa, was detained under POTA by her government in 2004 on his arrival from the United States after he had made a pro-LTTE speech at a public meeting in Tirumangalam in Madurai.

DMK chief M Karunanidhi had condemned Vaiko's arrest at that time.

This is the second time that Vaiko has been arrested for supporting the banned group, the earlier occasion being during the previous AIADMK government when he was held under POTA.

Vaiko was arrested under the Unlawful Prevention Activities Act, police said.

He was remanded to 14 days judicial custody.

Vaiko said soon after his arrest that his party was for India's sovereignty. At the same time, it could not allow the Centre to provide arms and ammunition and logistics support to Sri Lankan government 'to perpetuate war against Tamils’.

Refugees from Srilanka by Kula on 23 Oct 2008

Do they want them to be killed before they reach India. As you know SL army is not scared to kill your Indian fishermen. Killing Srilankan refugees are not very difficult, because they know nobody will ask them.

Vaiko by Dominic on 23 Oct 2008

Unfair arrest , simply because the govt is showing double standards - Togadia and Singhal as well as KS sudarshan should first be arrested for treason and anti-national statments

Vaiko Aresst by G. F. G. Sekhar on 23 Oct 2008

I heard the full speech of Vaiko in the internet. I dont find anything detrimental to the sovereignty of India. Those who support his arrest...will you demand the arrest of VHP, Bajrang Dal and other fundamentalists who are trying to break this country through their communalism? Law is same for everyone. Hang them first and then Vaiko. Please do not undermine the feelings of the Tamils. Only a true tamilian will understand the suffferings of the SL tamils. Any support to them is not a crime. Take lessons from America...who doesnt care to interefere in the affairs of anyone when its people are threatened. Well done Vaiko!

ELIMINATING LTTE by SHEIK WISEL on 23 Oct 2008

We should ban MDMK, poltical parties, organizations and indviduals who support LTTE, a terrorist outfit who killed all the Srilankans peace loving Tamil leaders. LTTE is also fully responsible for killing our former prime minister Mr.Rajiv Gandhi . The so called support of Srilankan Tamils by the MDMK and others are simple way of getting attention. Why they won't cut off their relationship with LTTE first ? which is a banned terrorist group by the world and start work for the innocent Tamils there. If they really worried about the well being of the Srilankan Tamils, then they should spend their time in collecting money, food, clothes, medicine etc. and send those things to the needy people there through Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations. This is the right path they should take. LTTE is responsible for burning villages in the Northern Srilanka and did many atrocities to Tamils. We should support the Srilankan government to remove LTTE from its soil and safe guard others.

Treason of Vaiko by John on 23 Oct 2008

This Vaiko should be hanged on a tree and shoot for treason. The chieftain of LTTE is a wanted criminal of India for murdering a prime minister candidate of India.

Do'nt Play With Fire by Dr Narayan Singh Rao on 23 Oct 2008

India has paid heavy price by intervening directly in Srilankan Affair. Those who were helped failed to appreciate us .They even bled India by attacking Indian Armed Forces.Srilankan insurgents do not listen India and even Tamil leaders of Tamilnadu. If India argues the case of Tamilhomeland than how it will silence the demand for seperate homeland in J

India and Sri Lankan Tamils by Karunakara Menon on 23 Oct 2008

India must support the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils while not directly talking to the LTTE outfit. LTTE, by killing Rajiv Gandhi, has made India a permanent enemy. It was a foolish act ordered by Prabhakaran. LTTE must handover Prabhakaran to India in a tradeoff deal to gather India's support for the Tamil cause. Sri Lankan Tamils are Hindus and their origin is from India. Sangh Parivar must get involved with this issue. Sri Lankan Tamils need India's help, and without which they can never achieve anything in Sri Lanka. India should not mix the issues like the murder of Rajiv Gandhi, the LTTE, the plight of Tamils and the serious violation of human rights by the Rajpakse Government. India should mediate to negotiate a ceasefire between the warring armies. Sri Lanka must admit the Tamilian cause and their right for self governance.
