New Delhi Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee continued to be on ventilation on Saturday with his respiratory track infection remaining a cause of concern, doctors attending on him at AIIMS said.

"Vajpayee's condition is stable. His heart is stable but his lungs require support and that is why we are putting him on ventilation," said Dr Sampath Kumar, head of Cardiac Thoracic Vascular Sciences of AIIMS.

"His respiratory track infection is the cause of his problem. But his liver, kidney, blood pressure are normal. It will take some time before he recovers fully," he said.

Kumar had yesterday said that the BJP leader's respiratory track infection had worsened.

The 84-year-old leader was admitted to AIIMS on Tuesday with complaints of fever and chest congestion. Doctors later found that he was suffering from pneumonia.

Vajpayee continues to be in the ICU where his progress is being monitored by a team of doctors.

BJP leaders L K Advani and Rajnath Singh had on Thursday called on Vajpayee. The BJP national executive, which was held yesterday in Nagpur, expressed concern over the condition of the party patriarch and prayed for his fast recovery.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee visited AIIMS on Saturday and enquired about Vajpayee's health from doctors and family members.

"I understand that Vajpayee is fighting the problem very bravely. I am confident that he will be out of hospital very soon. I wish him a very speedy and complete recovery," Chatterjee said.

Vajpayeeji by J.M.Manchanda on 08 Feb 2009

Best wishes to Vajpayeeji for an early recovery. He is the moderate voice of BJP and ensures its acceptance by other parties. He was the only leader from BJP who had th guts to tell Modi in the wake of Gujarat riots that Rajdharma must be followed. in other words, those in power have to ensure the safety and well-being of all the people. It is only befitting that all leaders-from Sonia gandhi to Somnath Chatterji- have called on him to offer their good wishes. May he live long to inspire BJP.

He and his services are needed by romesh.sharma on 07 Feb 2009

In today's India he is most loving politician and great patriot. His services and sacrifications for the love and unity of shattered country are no less than any other National leader.May God bless him to celebrate his 100th birthday in healthy physical and mental state.Good to hear that SomnathChatterjee had decency to visit him in Hospital but how about a courtcy call by ManMohan singh who had blamed BJP people of cursing/wishing his demise when he was in HospitalCongress and congress men/women can go too cheap and mean to achievetimely sympathy/ popularity and not BJP leaders!Nobody from BJP has ever said anything like that and its God wil keep blessing hand on the righteous and virtuous and Vajpayee is the one.
