New Delhi Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was discharged from AIIMS as doctors declared him fit to go home after 26 days of stay at the Intensive Care Unit, family sources said.

"It is a blessing for the BJP that he has recovered and returned home. He is alright and will be taken care of by doctors at home," BJP leader Vijay Goel, who was present at AIIMS, told PTI.

Vajpayee's adopted daughter Namita Bhattacharjee was besides the 84-year-old leader at the time of the discharge.

The veteran leader was admitted to the hospital after complaints of chest infection on February 3 which was later diagnosed as pneumonia. He was kept on ventilator support as he was not able to breath on his own following the lung infection.

Doctors conducted tracheotomy on Vajpayee on February 13 to ease his respiration process.

From the hospital bed, Vajpayee has kept an update on happenings around the world. He has also listened to his favourite old Hindi movie songs and watched the repeat telecast of Oscar awards.

Welcome Back by Vedic Indian on 01 Mar 2009

Welcome back sir. As an erstwhile BJP supporter I am happy to see you in good health back again. BJP without you have fast degenerated into a bunch of hudlooms hell bent upon destroying this hard earned nation by promoting and mobilising ignorance and bigotry. Hopefully you can put some senses into the minds of your fellow party members.

Atal must leave the bad company by Jas on 01 Mar 2009

I am glad for you that you are back to heath. May I advise you to leave the bad company of BJP/RSS, you been keeping. I think you are too nice of a person to belong to such a bunch of backward goons. See, no woman ever cared to marry you, inspite of the fact that you are a sensitive man with poetic abilities. You already have paid too much of a price for associating with that bad old boy Advani. It may be news to you but I must tell you that Advani does not like you anymore. Rest well and watch lots of movies before Sangis declare them against their culture. I tell you those new heroines are not too bad.
