New Delhi The condition of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS, was stable on Monday and his chest infection was under control, doctors attending him said.

"His condition is stable. He is responding to treatment," Superintendent of AIIMS D K Sharma said.

"The pneumonia is under control with the prognosis being good. Gradually his oxygenation (amount of oxygen in blood purified by the lungs) level has shown improvement and there is no spread of pneumonia," Head of Cardiac Thoracic Vascular Sciences Department of AIIMS Sampath Kumar said.

"His lungs are clearing and he is doing fine," he added.

The 84-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday last with complaints of fever and chest congestion.

Doctors later found that he was suffering from pneumonia.

Kumar had yesterday said that the former Prime Minister was making progress and all the basic parameters like his heart, kidney, liver and blood pressure were normal and his lungs were recovering.
