Amritsar, January 25 The Panthic crisis following the hukumnama issued by Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh, seeking amendments in manner of reciting Gurbani and the Nanakshahi Calender, deepened today when Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti rejected Giani Iqbal’s suggestions.

In an emergency meeting convened at the Akal Takht secretariat, Jathedar Vedanti said the Sikh masses should not attach any importance to Jathedar Patna Sahib’s statement in this regard.

Sikh high priests, including Jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib Giani Tarlochan Singh, Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh, head granthi of Golden Temple Giani Gurbachan Singh and granthi Mal Singh, besides Vedanti, were present in the emergency meeting. It was decided to hold another meeting on February 5 on the issue.

Last night, a round of meetings were held between Vedanti, Tarlochan Singh and SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar. The Sikh clerics outrightly rejected the edict issued by Iqbal Singh on January 18, wherein he had not only rejected the Nanakshahi Calendar, but had also raised serious objections relating to the maryada on recitation of Gurbani.

Vedanti said only the Akal Takht was entitled to take decisions on religious issues pertaining to the Panth, whereas Takht Patna Sahib could only decide on local issues. He said the edict issued by Iqbal Singh was misleading and had created confusion among the Sikhs.

On the other hand, Giani Iqbal Singh said he cannot be suspended from the post of jathedar and said he stood by the hukamnama issued by him and demanded serious discussion on the issue of maryada. When asked if he would participate in the next meeting of the Sikh high priests, he said he would do so if invited.
