The protesters criticised the council for uprooting them from their lands that were given to their forefathers by the British government on lease at the time of establishment of Ambala Cantonment.
The protesters led by Councillor Hira Lal Yadav claimed that the Collector office served notices asking the vegetable and flower growers to vacate their lands within a week. The agitators demanded that the notice should be withdrawn and the lease should be renewed for another 99 years.
The protesters said that they had sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister for stay of the eviction order. Some members threatened to self-immolate themselves if they were evicted from their lands.
When contacted the council officials maintained that the notices were issued after the lease had expired. Consequently, the receipt of the lease money was also stopped as the vegetable and flower growers were occupying the land illegally. The notice said that on the expiry of the notice period, all families occupying the land illegally would be evicted.
