Ludhiana, February 2 The tehbazari branch of the Municipal Corporation had yesterday challaned eight shops near the Raghunath Hospital for allowing vendors to stand in front of their shops after charging between Rs 2,000 to 3,000 per month. The team also targeted vendors the nearby fruit market. But after two hours, the vendors were back in their place.

The fruit and vegetable market outside Aggar Nagar was also cleared for the tenth time yesterday but there too the vendors surfaced within a few hours.

Tehbazari superintendent Naveen Malhotra said, "We are trying our best but violations continue unabated. The only thing we can do is to re-visit the market again on Monday."

However, rehri owners rue that they are the sole breadwinners of the family and the MC is troubling them without any reason.

They claim that on one hand the MC is giving them a demarcated rehri market but at the same time clearing areas in the name of encroachments.

But the officials in the corporation say that ruled out any plans to allot any market to street vendors, at least for now. “But their drive to clear rehris from this city is on,” they claim.

The vendors standing near the Raghunath Hospital are making good business because the have middle class and upper middle class clientele, but still they are claiming that it is hard to make their both ends meet.
