"The veteran cricketer should have resigned when the first time the BCCI objected to his writings newspapers columns because nothing is greater than 'self-pride' of a man," Sidhu told reporters on the sidelines of a function in the capital.

Vengsarkar had expressed his willingness to step down for the second time in two weeks following his stand-off with the BCCI, which has banned the selectors from writing syndicate columns in newspapers.

Sidhu said selectors should be appointed in the same way as the Supreme Court judges.

"There should be no place of regionalism during the process as the selectors represent the nation and not the regions," he said.

He also said the rules for cricketers and Board officials should be same.

"The rules should be equal for Board officials and the cricketers," he said referring to a Board official who still to continues to write in papers.
