Ludhiana, May 16 Villagers from nearby areas gathered at Shaheed Chatar Singh Park today to protest the soaring prices of essential commodities.

The call for the protest march culminated outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner. It was organised was on the call of Communist Party of India (ML). The protesters demanded that essential commodities should be provided at subsidised rates through public distribution system. Later, the protesters also submitted a memorandum to the DC, regarding their demands.

Addressing the gathering, Hardev Singh Sandhu, President, Kul Hind Kisan Mazdoor Sabha, condemned the removal of governmental subsidies for the agricultural sector. He said, “On the pretext of diversification of crops, the government is acquiring farming land and facilitating big business houses,” he added.

Sandhu asserted that the government’s inefficiency in checking the black marketeers and hoarders has added to the problems of common man. “The government is trying to shirk its responsibility, by terming the rise in prices as a worldwide phenomenon,” he said. Sandhu said the politicians were falsely claiming that this is a short period phenomenon and will soon vanish. “The government needs to shun its lethargic attitude and try seriously to control the prices,” he stressed.
