Ludhiana, July 20 Manpreet Singh Ayali is the Ludhiana district’s Zila Parishad chairman. Post Independence, it is for the first time that the party has bagged the post. An alumnus of SCD Government College, he was elected the Chairman of the Zila Parishad last week. He shares his future plans withRAAKHI JAGGA.

Though SAD-BJP coalition exists since long, a BJP candidate contested polls against you. What is the reason behind this?

BJP did not field their candidate against the party but against me. However, BJP candidate Major Singh Jetwal was defeated. I also defeated Congress candidate Gurdeep Singh. A few BJP leaders were having personal interest in the village due to a land-grab controversy. I was expecting this kind of opposition.

Allegations of booth capturing were levelled against you on the voting day.
Opposition leaders levelled these charges, but they failed to establish anything. It was all baseless. They had also charged me with providing sops during the election campaign.

As a Zila Parishad Chairman, what are your plans for the district?
This post has been neglected for the past several years. In fact, all the 980 villages of Ludhiana come under the Zila Parishad Chairman. Twenty-five Zila Parishad members and 12 Block Samitis chairmen have chosen me for the coveted post. I want to focus on plantation drives in villages, so as to make the rural folk aware about environmental issues. I also want to encourage sports-related activities in government schools of villages.

Any other plans for villages?
Villages at the moment don’t have an efficient sewerage system. An MoU has been signed between the state government and the World Bank wherein the bank will provide grant for water and sewage facilities in villages.

Around five per cent of the fund will be generated by villagers while the remaining will be funded by the World Bank. I will send the projects of villages in a phased manner to get the grant at the earliest. At the moment, 350 villages do not have proper water supply lines while sewer lines have been laid in almost all the villages. We plan to set up sewerage treatment plants in villages so that treated water can be used for irrigation.
