Chandigarh, January 12 In a reply full of denials, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has fended off S S Virk’s allegations whereby Virk, former Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, has produced on record, Badal’s statement made in a Vidhan Sabha debate dated February 24, 2006, stating that he does not remember the statement made by him at this stage.

In the Vidhan Sabha debate, Badal, while addressing Captain Amarinder Singh, who was then the Chief Minister, had said in the assembly, “Virk is married to one of our relatives. I want to say that whatever help I had extended to Virk, you would not do the same. I had made a number of recommendations, which can be verified from the files. A person who did not remain loyal to me, how can he remain loyal to you? Our government will come in power and not yours.”

Virk had moved the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), raising suspicions over allegations of political vendetta and malafide intentions against the present government and Badal. Badal had refused to comment on this allegation by stating that he does not remember his statement at this stage. Interestingly, Virk has furnished that statement in the CAT now.

Refuting allegations of political vendetta, Badal has given another interesting reply to Virk. He submitted that the allegations levelled against Virk were not by Badal but by the party workers and Shiromani Akali Dal workers. He also denied having any political goal in the removal of the head of the police department as it was considered to be a big shot in the arm for the SAD during the time of elections. Badal also denied thinking Virk to be a turncoat and siding with the Congress party.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court during the resumed hearing of the disproportionate assets against Virk had strongly objected to the statement made by the Chief Minister.

Badal, when questioned whether he had any knowledge about Virk’s arrest, had submitted that he was not informed about the same. When the statement was brought to the notice of the Court, it came as a surprise that the Chief Minister of the state did not know about the arrest of the former DGP.

On April 4, 2007, Virk was suspended from his post by the Punjab government. On April 10, the deputation of Virk from Maharashtra to Punjab was terminated premature by the centre. On April 20, a chargesheet was served to Virk by the Punjab government.

Virk alleged that after his deputation was terminated, the Punjab government had no right to take any departmental action against him.
