Patiala, March 12 Former Punjab Local Bodies minister Ch Jagjit Singh was on Wednesday grilled by the special probe panel constituted by the Punjab Government for reinvestigating charges of corruption and disproportionate assets against former DGP S S Virk.

On Wednesday, the former minister finally made his appearance before the probe panel, but armed with an anticipatory bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. But, Virk, who was also to appear before the panel, did not turn up. This is the third time Virk has failed to appear.

The minister had been fearing his arrest in the case and was thus “avoiding” appearance before the panel headed by Patiala SSP S K Asthana. He later moved the High Court, seeking interim bail and appeared only after securing it.

Questioning the former local bodies minister for his role in helping Virk clear his housing society in Zirakpur, the probe panel presented Singh a written questionnaire seeking his reply on the issues raised therein by Thursday. The former minister has been charged with going “out of the way” to include three acres belonging to Virk in the Zirakpur Notified Area Committee, even while the village panchayat had rejected such a proposal earlier. While no land belonging to Chhat village was included on the plea that the Zirakpur NAC had no money for doing so, only Virk’s land was included.
