Sehwag finished unbeaten on 309 as India reached 468 for one in reply to South Africa's first innings 540 all out at the close on the third day.
The 29-year-old, who also made 309 against Pakistan at Multan in 2004, became only the third player to achieve the feat of two triple 100s, matching Australian Don Bradman and West Indies batsman Brian Lara.
It was the fastest triple hundred in Test cricket since the scorers began recording number of balls faced by a batsman.
Sehwag raced to 300 off 278 balls in the final session, surpassing Australian Matthew Hayden's 362-ball effort when he scored a then world record 380 against Zimbabwe at Perth in 2003-4.
The Indian batsman lashed 42 fours and five sixes to race to his triple hundred, nudging paceman Makhaya Ntini for a single to squareleg.
Sehwag, who batted for eight hours to reach the milestone, lifted his arms triumphantly and embraced partner Rahul Dravid as the South African fielders applauded and the Indian players and the rest of the spectators gave him a standing ovation.

Sehwag has done a wonderful job. When he does it he does it very well. I agree, he lacks consistency. Sachin is undoutedly the greatest of all time in the world. He is a real maestro.
Bless him with 10 more fours, 3 more sixers and finally 33 singles or double or combination to make his carrier achievemnet to reach 400
Sewag unbeaten; Africa smitten. Triple ton; Armageddon.
It is absurd to undermine Sachin's feats just because he has not scored a triple century. Sachin is incomparable. And it is highly idiotic to ask him to retire. After all he scored the most runs in the Test Series against Aussies on lively and seaming pitches. The so called critics derive pleasure in floating some foolish debates like "Should Sachin be dropped and so on" when our players do something good to the team. Sachin still has got about 5 years of international cricket and the whole world will live to see his 100th International century on one fine day. Sehwag - on 28.03.2008 - is great. But Sachin HAS BEEN THE GREATEST SINCE 1989; AMD WILL BE SO IN SO MANY YEARS TO COME.Dear Sehwag. You dont have nothin to do with this ludicrous debate. You deserve all the praise. Congrats. go on. Make 401 Plus on 29.03.2008. I am eager to make more comments tomorrow.
Sehwag's triple century is a great knock - no doubt - but he lacks consistency. If only he can play with some consistency and make decent scores with regularity,he can surely be considered as one of the all time great Indian batsmen. But the way is long to go for him.
