Sehwag finished unbeaten on 309 as India reached 468 for one in reply to South Africa's first innings 540 all out at the close on the third day.
The 29-year-old, who also made 309 against Pakistan at Multan in 2004, became only the third player to achieve the feat of two triple 100s, matching Australian Don Bradman and West Indies batsman Brian Lara.
It was the fastest triple hundred in Test cricket since the scorers began recording number of balls faced by a batsman.
Sehwag raced to 300 off 278 balls in the final session, surpassing Australian Matthew Hayden's 362-ball effort when he scored a then world record 380 against Zimbabwe at Perth in 2003-4.
The Indian batsman lashed 42 fours and five sixes to race to his triple hundred, nudging paceman Makhaya Ntini for a single to squareleg.
Sehwag, who batted for eight hours to reach the milestone, lifted his arms triumphantly and embraced partner Rahul Dravid as the South African fielders applauded and the Indian players and the rest of the spectators gave him a standing ovation.

viru. welcome back. i was always waiting for u to come back.well done and keep it up.please don't talk too much... only keep talking with your bat
It was all round great cricket with Viru joining Bradman and Lara to score his second triple hundred! The South African players applauding his agrressive innings is very touching. Thers is a lesson for Sreesanth(if this idiotic moron is capable of learning anything at all)that THIS is what aggression is all about! Show aggression in performnace like, Viru, Laxman, Sachin and Kumble, and the whole world, including the opposition will respect you. (Aussies respect and love the above mentioned Indians like their own). Keep up the classy aggression Viru!
I will agree that sehwag batted well for his 309 but some where i feel that are these worst pithches helpfull in providing good cricket. cricket is not all about batting. pitches should be sensible like that ones in australia.
This terrific knock has not only displayed Shewag's capabilities but has also demonstrated Team India's Strength and Presence in Test cricket.
Some guy had made comments over dropping sachin.i will kick that fellow if he's at my presence. if sehwag performs well is there a need to drop a legend.sachin knows when to retire. u guys dont have the right to talk over sachin.
