They are hard-core techies. From high-rise buildings to microcircuits, from robotics to satellites, they navigate everything with absolute ease. But even when these engineers in the making have chosen engineering as their profession, they haven't forgotten to give justice to the artist within them either.

College of Engineering, Pune, a college that is associated with the history of this city, with names like Vishveshwarraiyya is also a home for art, drama and music. And the recently organised art exhibition was a perfect representative of the COEP culture. The centre of attraction for this year's art exhibition was a gigantic painting that is now registered in the Guinness book of world records. Based on the theme- From evolution to destruction, the painting is as humongous as 599.94 metre by 1 metre compared to the previous world record of 144 metre by 1 metre, prepared in UK.

The painting portrays all the important events in the history of mankind-from wars to inventions and from Stone Age to the software revolution. "Taking the occasion of women's day, we have also portrayed the challenges that women have faced. We have then presented solutions to those challenges that can make the world a better place for women across the globe," says Mrunalkumar Chaudhari, one of the organisers of the event.

" We have been working on this painting since last ten days. And if you think that this is the only painting that we have created, you are mistaken because during the practice sessions we have made twenty such paintings," adds Chaudhari. What sets the painting apart from the previous record is that compared to 650 people who worked on the previous world record painting, COEP had only 134 students working on it. And then was it easy for those 134 to get through? "We had received entries from 317 students. They had to go through an audition after which the number came down to 134," adds Chaudhari.

The exhibition has a history of having something astounding every year. While it was a 20 feet by 23 feet painting last year, a 20 feet by 20 feet by 20 feet replica of the Taj Mahal was the point of appeal the year before. With the Guinness book of world records in focus, the event this year has crossed all the limits and taken COEP on an altogether different level.
