Deccan Gymkhana police investigating the case said an offence may be registered in the case after they get the report from the Regional Transport Office, which had examined the car.

At 7.40 am on January 30, Gupta, who ran a grocery shop in Kasarwadi, had gone to Fergusson College Road for breakfast, after his routine walk on the University of Pune campus. He died on Monday.

Senior inspector Manohar Joshi of Deccan police said, “The car caught fire when he came near Vaishali restaurant on FC Road. Gupta was stuck inside the car as the doors had got locked. Some citizens broke the windscreen and pulled him out of the burning car.”

Police said Gupta had heard a sound in the car Near Good Luck chowk.

Joshi said, “It was a black Volkswagen Vento... another car was parked there... was also damaged. Gupta was immediately taken to a private hospital. He succumbed to burns on Monday afternoon.”

He added, “A team from the Regional Transport Office had carried out an examination of the car. They will give their report in a day or two. An offence may be registered in the case after we get the report. An expert team from the company has taken the car for examination.”

Deputy RTO Sanjay Dhaigude said, “By Friday evening we would be ready with the report.”
