Since the locations of such colleges have become detrimental in giving their 50,000 students a headstart in their career, the WBUT is mulling over the idea of providing its Salt Lake campus to these colleges for the recruitment drive.
The head of WBUT’s computer science department, Suddhakhina Kundu, feels that during a recruitment drive, private firms give more emphasis on quantity than quality.
“That is why the private companies try to wrap up the recruitment process as soon as possible and inevitably ignore colleges in far-flung areas,” he added.
The WBUT has 120 colleges under it that offer technical and non-technical degrees.
Colleges located in Guptipara, Mallabhum, Bolpur, Dunkal and Chandragona are the worst hit from this.
“We are making the centre available for all colleges that require our help. In six months, more colleges will approach us and we will have to set up a separate centre for them, “ said Vice-Chancellor of WBUT Ashok Ranjan Thakur.
Last year, colleges like Saroj Mohan Institute of Technology in Guptipara had sought the WBUT’s help in arranging a campus-recruitment drive for its students.
It was held at the varsity’s campus and a lot of students were able to secure jobs.
In November 2007, the university organised a placement drive for students pursuing bachelor degree in computer application (BCA) in various colleges across the state. Many colleges like Asansol Engineering College, JIS Engineering College and NSHM engineering College in Durgapur participated in the recruitment where about 40 students were hired by different firms.
According to the university officials, the decision over setting up of a centre will be taken in next six months after receiving the response from the colleges about the idea.
