Panchkula, March 13 * Ward number 24
* Area — Haripur and parts of Sector 4
* Category — General
* Overall rating — 3/10

Despite being one of the smallest wards covering Haripur village and a few houses of Sector 4, the sector presents poor sanitation conditions with cow dung littered all around. While ward councilor Sharanjit Kaur says that she has done to the best of her abilities, residents think otherwise. They might prefer some other candidate to Kaur in the forthcoming Municipal Council elections.

Newsline talks to a cross-section of the residents to know more about their grievances and their opinion about their present councillor.

Residentspeak
Harish Arora, a resident of Haripur village said, “Our councilor had made several promises but in reality nothing has been done in the last five years. One problem peculiar to the village is the problem of stray cattle and poor sanitation.” He further added that although the overall performance of the sitting councillor has been satisfactory, a lot is needed to improve the civic condition of the village.

Another resident of the village DK Narang said the problem of illegal construction in the village has increased manifolds in the last five years.

“Several times in the past we complained to the authorities regarding illegal construction but it has fallen on deaf ears. The councilor, therefore, does not stand a good chance to win the MC elections this time.”

As for Anil Kumar Anand, a resident of the same ward, “There have been several cases of robbery and shooting in the village recently. The crime rate is increasing day-by-day. So far nothing has been done to check it. Another major problem in the ward is the cow dung which leads to poor sanitation condition.”

According to Manoj Verma, dumping ground is next to the government primary school of the village resulting in unhygienic condition for children. “To add to the problem, waterlogging causes havoc in the village during rainy season,” added Verma.

Another resident Sunita Garg said the residents have been paying taxes to get urban facilities but they are suffering as the sector lies next to the village. “This part of the sector has civic amenities like a village, we suffer due to the prevailing unhygienic conditions,” said Garg.

What do the rivals have to say
Dr Jagdish Kumar Nagrath, a resident of Haripur village, who plans to contest on a BJP ticket said, “In the last last five years, no developmental work has been carried out in the ward. The roads are in a bad shape. Then there is incessant waterlogging problem. The MC has failed to provide even the basic facilities to the villagers”. The extent of the inactiveness of the councilor can be gauged from the fact that the people of the village do not know about their councilor.

She further added that the problem of stray dogs and cow dung plague the village. She plans to get the primary school upgraded to the middle level.
