Panchkula, march 2 It is the kisan mandi that sits twice a week that has done all the harm to the residents of this ward of Panchkula. Adding to the agony is the fact that the after the mandi, the area becomes all the more dangerous with plastic bags and other remains unleashing havoc on the environment.

With the sweepers visiting the site once a month, garbage, plastic bags and the stink are what is left behind.

The poor condition of roads, non-functional streetlights and encroached public places have left the residents of this part of Sector 15 literally harassed.

Sunil Talwar, the councillor of the ward, says that several developmental works were initiated in the ward, if brought to power again he will get the pending works done.

Complaints and expectations of the residents of the ward

“The area where the kisan mandi is held is huge with a large number of ward houses touching upon it from either sides. The entire area has turned into a dumping ground for all. Along with the garbage of the entire sector, the malba of the entire Panchkula city is dumped here. What adds to the woes is the fact that the MC sweepers collect the plastic bags of the area and burn them therein, furthering pollution. It is one of the biggest causes of harassment for the residents of the ward. Many a time we have asked the authorities to do something about it but our complaints have fallen on deaf ears,” said Rohit Kalra, a resident of the ward.

Sheela Malhotra, another resident of the ward, blames the non-functional streetlights for the steep rise in the crime rate in the area.

“We have hardly seen functional streetlights in these last five years. Also the condition of the roads has been bad throughout the tenure of the present councillor. We have seen the newly-carpeted roads in need of a repair after a gap of just 15 days,” said Malhotra.

For Rakesh Sharma, the sanitary conditions and the problem of stray cattle have been worse than any other ward of the city. “A large number of stray cattle can be seen roaming during nights, making the area accident-prone. Though the MC officials have been claiming that a cattle trap to control the entry of the stray animals into the sector will be installed, it has not been done so far.”

Talking to Newsline, councillor Sunil Talwar said, “Though I am satisfied with the overall developmental works done in my ward, I would like to complete the pending works if brought to power again in the coming elections. In the past five years, we not only got the carpeting of roads of the Low Income group (LIG) done but also maintained the existing parks along with getting lights installed in the parks.”

He further added that efforts were being made by the council to do away with the problem of stray cattle by getting cattle traps installed in the sector.
