Kolkata, May 2 A Chemical warehouse at the industrial area in Tangra was gutted in fire on Friday. The articles destroyed in the fire included a large quantity of chemicals, furniture, fittings and documents of Sridarshan Packages Pvt Ltd, the company that owned the place. According to a fire brigade official, it took nearly four hours to control the fire that broke out at 9.35 am. “11 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames,” said director of the fire and emergency services Gopal Bhattacharya.

According to DG fire and emergency services Anil Kumar, “Right now we cannot ascertain the cause of the fire. An investigation will be carried out in this regard.” He added that though there were no casualty, one of the firemen suffered minor burns while trying to douse the flames.

Initially, the firefighters used water to douse the flames, as it was not known that the warehouse had chemicals inside. Later, the fire was brought under control by using foam and sand, along with water.

“We had to work very carefully while bringing the fire under control. We tried to make sure that the fire does not spread to other buildings as the warehouses in the area were very close to one another,” said a fire department official.
