A watchman of the Field Ganj locality said around 3.30 am on Monday, he spotted two people sitting in separate cars which had been parked near the Jagraon bridge. The watchman said he knew the owners of the cars so asked the two as to what they were doing. One of the two, who was a Sikh, claimed that the cars belonged to them and asked the watchman to mind his own business.
The watchman called the owners, Vijay Kumar and Vikram Thamman, both residents of Street Number 5, Field Ganj. The two sitting in the cars tried to escape. One of them managed to flee but the Sikh was overpowered by the area residents with the help of the Gurdwara Dukhnivaran Sahib volunteers. The area was unusually busy at such a late hour because the Guru Granth Sahib Jagriti Yatra was about to reach the gurdwara.
Said Division Number 2 SHO Surinder Mohan, “We are very busy making arrangements for the smooth passage of the Jagriti Yatra in the area. So we have yet to investigate the car theft attempt”.
Vikram Thamman told Newsline that the duo had broken the locks of the cars. “But luckily the watchman was alert enough to notice them. Around two weeks ago, the locks of my car had been broken so I had asked the watchman to stay alert,” said Thamman.
A number of cars belonging to residents of this area are parked near the Jagraon bridge because of shortage of parking space.
CONG LEADER’S CAR DAMAGED
The car of a Congress leader, Abraham Irshad, was damaged by some people last night around 9.30 pm. Irshad had reportedly gone to a cyber cafe adjoining the Christian Medical College building. “I had parked my car just a few feet from the cyber cafe. When I returned around 11 pm, I found the rear windshield of the car broken,” said Irshad.
He has filed a complaint with the Division Number 3 police. Apprehending a threat to his life and property, Irshad has urged the government to ensure his security.
