Pune, January 25 If everything goes as per Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) plan, citizens of Pune will wind up paying one rupee more per kilo litre of water from April 1. The civic administration has proposed to increase the water charges for the domestic users within PMC limit from the present Rs 3 per kilolitre to Rs 4, the proposed hike being a steep 30 per cent.

Water is going to be even costlier for domestic users falling under the purview of Pune and Khadki Cantonment Boards and those living outside the municipal limits. They will have to fork out 6.50 per kilolitre, up from Rs 5 now. Presently, the civic administration is spending Rs 200 crore on water supply in the city.

The last raise made in the water charges for the domestic users was in the year 2000,whereas for the non-domestic users it was last made in 2005.

The proposal for the rate hike has been tabled before the standing committee of the PMC that is to meet next Tuesday.

The proposal has come in the wake of the Pune municipal commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi recently admitting that the civic administration had failed in providing sufficient water to all the parts of the city.

The reasons put forth by the civic administration for the proposed hike include a probable 25 per cent increase in the electricity charges next year, rise in the prices of the chemicals, equipment and other material by about 30 per cent.

The proposal also says that in order to bridge the gap between expenditure and revenue collection, it was mandatory to raise the water charges.

The civic administration in its proposal mentions that it intends to appoint an advisor for carrying out a survey of water supply in the city and also to install water meters throughout the city by the next year and collect charges according to the new meters.
