There is reason to rejoice because Mumbai will be playing in the tournament after a gap of five years, though manager Sanjay Carneiro is uncertain of what to expect from the young side. “We will be taking part in the tournament after a long time and therefore we don’t really know what to expect,” he says.
MJ Patel, one of the selectors looked pleased with the team but raised apprehensions when he said, “Though they’re very talented, most of these boys are of a slighter built and may lag behind.”
Wayne Vaz, the captain of the Under-14 team has played football and hockey both at the national level and is therefore aware of the situation. However, he’s ready to hold his nerve for the moment when he says, “We have the confidence of giving a good performance.”
When it comes to the overall combination, the team has a good mix. Royston Chatterton, Wayne Vaz, Nikhil Poojari, Branden Gonsalves, Jerryd Nunes, Merwyin Stephen have all played a few state level matches while players like the diminutive Rajat Sharma, Sunny Jain and Anup Walmiki will be representing Mumbai for the first time.
