Colombo Acknowledging that there was international pressure on it, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that the country cannot allow LTTE chief Prabhakaran's "ghost" to rule Sri Lanka even after his death.

"There is international pressure on us. There is pressure from outside the country and from within to reverse the victories we achieved. However, we cannot let that happen. We cannot let the country be taken backwards," he said on Wednesday while addressing a gathering in the South-Eastern Hambantota town.

"We cannot allow Prabhakaran's ghost to govern the country now that he is no more. No one has got the right to go to that point. Therefore, we all have the responsibility to keep this in mind and work for the future," he said.

Prabhakaran was killed on May 18 by the Sri Lankan military.

Earlier, the President laid the foundation stones for the new Administrative Office and the Tank Farm Project in the premises of the Hambantota Port.

The bunkering facility will comprise of 14 tanks, eight of which will be used to provide oil for ships while three will be used to store LPG.

Rest of the tanks will be used for providing oil to aircrafts. The new Administrative Building will comprise of 15 floors spread over a total floor area is 100,000 sq ft.

Construction work of the port is scheduled to be completed by the year 2011 with a total cost of USD 360 million

The Exim Bank of China will provide 85 per cent of the allocation.

Later winding up his campaign for the Southern Provincial Council elections in an adjacent town, he told a rally that the people of South will react to international allegations levelled against the leaders who pioneered the humanitarian mission against LTTE "terror" through polls on October 10.

President Rajapaksa said certain parties were engaged in a malicious attempt to discredit the government at international level.

He said the government will always work towards strengthening relations with the international community.

President also noted that although USD 150 million benefit from the GSP trade concessions was vital to the country's economy, the government will not succumb to unwarranted conditions to get it.

Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa's treason against Srilanka by Karuppen on 11 Oct 2009

Srilanka's President Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa, contrary to his polishing image of a self-proclaimed hero in wiping out LTTE terrorism in Srilanka, is NOT what the Srilankan citizens and the world are made to believe. He has already committed treason(s) against Srilanka by revamping LTTE with millions of Rupees through backdoor payments to LTTE. The truth has yet to come out to the public view. All opposition parties, irrespective of their political views, join forces in bringing him and his military thugs to justice. Corruption, anarchy, selective killings of citizens, forceful internment rule the country now. The absence of the law and order is the sign of a ghost land which Mr Mahinda Rajapakssa now dreams of. The mask he has worn to cheat the Srilankans and the world at large has to be ripped off to reveal the real ghost hidden therein.

Ghost only haunts when you digress by Karuppen on 10 Oct 2009

Srilanka's president Mr Mahinda Rajapaksa's outspoken remarks on shunning away Prabhakaran's ghost to rule Srilanka are out of touch with the evolving reality he is going to face soon. Ghost does not rule, but always haunts your law of conscience which is the spring board for the actual experience in human life. Nor is Srilanka better adapted to Srilanka's president Mr Haninda Rajhapaksa's syndrom of wiping out a cultural identity of the minority. What you have initiated through state violence will get you in the same way you already know. When thugs form a government as is the case in srilanka, it is a trajedy that the absence of the law and order in the society does not protect the minority. It is not long before a major change is to evolve to shut out these thugs out of politics for ever.
